I use the Here navigation app on my android. C8 uses Here as their navigation (Pg 167 of the 2021 manual). On my phone all map updates are free and continuous. So does Chevy charge for updates? Note that the manual says says " HERE, Maps for life" so is this BS?

No, you don't get free map updates, nor are they continuous. What you see on pg 167 is simply a Here Technologies logo:

Similar logos can be seen on pg 163 for immersion, HR Radio and gracenote. That entire section is "Trademarks and License Agreements".

GM charges for the map update as it supposedly needs to be Customized to the platform and of course there are handling charges. I suspect automakers are leery of letting some other company control what is displayed in their vehicles, especially if something unsafe comes up like stranding somebody on a dirt road in the middle of a snowstorm where they die from exposure which results in a lawsuit.

The problems are they only update about once per year and the updates can be a year or so behind. Not sure about the C8 using Google's Here base but it may be the same as previous models, once the car is over a year out of production they won't update the database anymore and there is no way to get an aftermarket update.

So better off to use WAZE, Google MAPs or HERE app on phone than pay $150 every couple of years to upgrade to outdated maps. Been doing that on my C7 with Android play. BTW my C7 built in Nav once took me to a Jeep quality road and to a dead end road.

Im not as much concerned about the updates as i am that every time it gives directional information it cuts out my cell phone so it sounds to the other person that the call is dropping. Is there any setting that can be made to fix this or maybe mute the turn by turn voice prompts? just wondering if anyone else dealt with this?

You can cancel guidance while on your call and restart it when you have completed your call

Another Nav question: Can the onboard Nav system display the next cross street name? (Not related to guidance)

When using the C8 Nav it shows the next turn in the green bar across the top. On the right end of that bar is a speaker icon. Just click on that to mute the voice directions, click again to unmute. I assume it may fix your concern. Give it a try.
