Interesting. I think SEMA is more concerned about the impact on aftermarket high performance parts businesses of increased enforcement. They are lobbying this proposed legislation as an effort to protect motor sports, which makes it politically more palatable.
However in truth, the majority of these parts end up on street cars that never see a race track. Vendors have been getting away with it in the past by advertising parts as "off road use only."
I've no problem driving stock, like new Vettes, and building other cars of my own to go nuts with. It just doesn't have to be one and the same vehicle for me, so no problem with stock Vette tuning and/or no aftermarket options here.
There is a gigantic gap between that and "duh goobermint is gonna ban all mods".
They're going after blatant violators of the Clean Air Act. Tampering with emissions hardware has been illegal for decades. But it finally got so bad with the coal rolling diesel bros that they finally started enforcing it. Now everyone is paying the price for their stupidity.
But there's a whole lot of stuff you can still do that doesn't involve gutting cats or deleting EGR systems. EPA doesn't even have jurisdiction over anything outside the emissions system, so it's legally impossible for them to ban "all mods".
As far as GM locking down the C8, it had just as much to do with the car being connected to the internet as it did with emissions laws. They don't want someone hacking into the car and commanding the electronic steering to hook a hard left into oncoming traffic.
You can buy 700hp Corvettes and 800hp Hellcats right off the showroom floor, with a warranty. I'm not sure what all this "oh boo hoo, they're bannin muh race pipes" whining is about.
I have to disagree with this. Are you aware of what the wot A/F ratio of the car is, how about the timing ? Your experience with a tuner in the past may not have worked out well for you but that is certainly not everyone's case. I can tell you that the commanded AF at wot is 12.0:1 (.81 lambda), the timing is very generous (26 to 28 degrees) but this car is very fat n happy. Leaning out the trims could net maybe 10-15, that may not sound like much but if you're able to tune the car then e85 or race fuel is now on the table where gains of an additional 25 or so are available. We haven't even discussed TCM tuning.
A base model may run low 11's. A well Tuned, well driven, perfect conditions modified base model may scratch very high 9's imo.
So what is a modified base model???? Lmao. Thats a giant window!!!! It’ll see 10’s bra, but 9’s is just being silly with light mods and headers.lmao. Some people don’t realize what a whole second is in the 1/4.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to start a thread and get everyone we know to sign this.
They won't ever ban assault rifles that have been responsible for thousands and thousands of innocent deaths over the years, that may not have occurred if the shooter had a standard clip rifle but watch and see if they don't stop us from tuning and modding our cars!!!!
(Oh, I'm NOT against guns or assault rifles in any way.......Just using it as am example)
I tell all my GUN friends, why do you need an assault rifle that will shoot a bagillion bullets per second........Same reason I need 850 RWHP on the street....BECAUSE I WANT IT!!!
That's got nothing to do with what's being talked about. Nobody is saying you can't have an 850 hp car. They're saying you can't take the emissions hardware off when you build it. Same way you can't take your gun out and shoot it any old place you feel like it, and you can't convert it to full auto "because you want it".

It's an inanimate object, that's like saying we should ban cars because the cars killed people when operated by drunk drivers. If we just didn't have cars these drunk driving deaths wouldn't occur. Cars aren't the problem, it's the drunk behind the wheel. Guns aren't the problem, it's the nut holding them. Why do we hold drunk drivers solely responsible for those deaths, but blame the guns? They didn't fire by themselves.
The drunk driving comparison would hold a lot more water if cars were designed specifically to be as effective as possible at letting a drunk driver kill as many people as possible. Because that is what an assault rifle is explicitly designed to do. The primary use of a car provides an immeasurable benefit to society with a relatively small negative consequent when used irresponsibly. The primary use of an assault rifle for a civilian provides a negligible benefit to society (personal enjoyment and a vague sense of checking government overreach) with a relatively massive negative consequence when used irresponsibly.
