Default Registration question

If I buy a Vette from out-of-state(which I am), can I still transfer my existing plate when it comes time for the dealer to do the regristration paperwork(and retain current plate), or must it all be new stuff with new plate?

Thinking about grabbing an interim play toy under C8 arrives.....

thx

You still register the vehicle in your home state, so whatever their rules are for transferring plates. I know in TX even with transferring the current plate, I had to use a temp tag until the registration was delivered to the dealership, about 6 weeks. Once I received the registration I was able to put the plate on. Check with your local DMV.

Depends on the state. Here in Texas, the plate goes with the car unless it's a vanity plate.

I live in Virginia, but I bought my first Vette in Maryland. The dealer couldn’t swap my plates from my trade-in because I lived in a different state. They gave me a temp plate and put my real plates in the front seat. I had to go to the VA DMV to register my car.

I see you are from NC. Our dealer transferred our plate from the trade in. We didn't have to pay property tax as that plate had the taxes paid. But next year....ouch!

Thanks for this. Does NC have a rebate form to get credit for the tax paid(I won't be trading car in, I'm selling it outright via private sale)?

I could not find a "rebate form"....It looks like the rules kinda change a little depending what county you reside in. Here is the link...https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/title-regi...perty-tax.aspx

I live in NC as well and have gotten reimbursed for some of the taxes paid after selling the car. There is not an official form but once you turn the plate just call the NC tax administration department (919) 856-5400 and they will prorate the unused taxes and mail you a check. Just make sure you turn in the plate first and it seems different each time I called (did it twice within the past 2 years) but one of the times they did require me to email them a bill of sale.

Edit: didn’t think about county differences but I would think your county’s tax office would be a good place to start. I’m in Wake county.

PA dealer was able to transfer my MD plate.

It depends upon the dealer. If they use a tag and title service, and a particular state allows plate transfers, it can be done. However, some dealers just don't want to hassle with out-of-state tag and title work.

Thanks for this. In my old state(Vermont) they had you fill out a short form then send you check, so it's was very straight forward.
Here....notsomuch. But sounds like there is way, with a little persistence.

If it is anything like Missouri, you can just transfer your existing plate (provided it is for the same class of vehicle) to the new car.

Depends on the selling dealer and what they can do with out of state sales... and, are willing to mess with. They may be limited, which is no big deal. Just do the transfer after you get it home, dealing with your own DMV personally. All the best.
