I just deactivated my Safe Driver even thou my OnStar 30 day trail period expired on 1st. The safe Drive was still active. So it is now deactivated!!!! and all the stuff it logged. Thanks for the heads up.
With or without OnStar, your car has a datalogger, and the police, or in a lawsuit the other party, can and will subpoena it in the event of a serious accident.
Yeah, so with the ECM/ECU's, they have had dataloggers for a long time, and these recorded all sorts of stuff like engine RPM, throttle position, brakes, accelerometer, etc.
I am guessing with OnStar equipped vehicles they are also recording GPS long/lat as well, whether or not you subscribe to onstar the GPS and cellular interfaces are there and in use.
I wonder how much telemetry data GM gets on all these cars in semi-real time? If someone is out doing burnouts and drifting and then has a DCT flip into limp mode (since all the oil has been sloshed HARD against the side of the T-case without the extra 2 qts added!), does GM get a nice little picture of them spinning in a parking lot and a OBD code tagged at that location?
Would be interesting to see how much analysis they do on this data to look for root causes of failures ostensibly to improve their product, or perhaps deny people warranty repairs?

Since the C8 in 2LT and 3LT trim has GPS data whether or not you use OnStar, GM doesn't need OnStar to get that info. The car is probably logging location data in real time as you drive.
The only thing that's certain is that GM will not willingly tell you how much data they're collecting and what they might use it for.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I did not know about it. I never intentionally subscribed to On-Star. My trial subscription, which apparently was activated, has expired. The smart driver feature was still activated after the trial subscription expired. My score was 89 (almost seem like a default score from reading the posts). I de-activated the feature. But I think that as others said, the info is probably still recorded, transmitted, and stored somewhere. I know that the diagnostics continue to work - I still get them on my 2017 Suburban and I never subscribed to On-Star there either.
Remember to immediately format your SD card in case you get stopped by the police and before you roll down the window. That little sucker will rat you in as well. It will affect your social credit score.
One has to wonder if there is a FUSE that can be pulled that will shut down the onstar / cellular link? Next question is whether the ECU stores/records data that would be buffered/transmitted later when onstar is re-energized or if at a dealer for service?
Is there is a limit to how much it records? Can it still record GPS position if the onstar module isn't powered?

I would be willing to bet the car does not have two cellular links, one for firmware and one for onstar. This all likely rides over the same cellular modem and it is very likely part of the onstar electronics package.
Just realized that I was being monitored by I think Onstar. Smart Driver is keeping track of my driving habits and even has a map of where I went. Is there a way to disable it? For those that have not seen it, go to your Chevrolet app and press more. Then press smart driver. You might be surprised. So where can I disable it?
Just read another post about this. Did not see a way to disable it.
Sincerely, You win the award for the most useful post on the Corvette Foeum this month (though it is only the 4th).
