The last year of the Fiero was actually a very good car. Too bad they'd already decided to kill it.
Yes, they finally got it right with adequate power. THAT was a damn good car and WAS a used car bargain before people realized it wasn't the bad car of previous years. But it was too late. Reputation was trashed.
I owned one of the first Fieros-- new 1984 I bought in 1983. I Survived--lol---it never burned. But could feel the heat in the window behind my head. Man it was bad., I drove the car from MA to SW Missouri when I moved. Car was an oven by time I got there. Had non existent acceleration with the AC on. Gorgeous car when new-- but severely underpowered.
This is really case study example of GM old management incompetence. Fiero was ORIGINALLY meant to be a budget, nice looking small get around car. Then just before original production apparently GM decided--hey if we tweak the look we can actually turn this into a sports car. And sell not for $6 K--but $11K! Engineering folks: "Oh but what about the economy car engine we had planned-- won't cut it for a sports car". GM management: No problem, no one will notice--it looks great. Of course--the little get around car turned race car got so stressed it literally burned...frequently...oops.
The irony is...I never thought I could LOVE a car like my '84 Fiero. 36 years later proven wrong by the C8. Hopefully with better outcome
The fiero seats were quite popular in many hot rods at one time. So they weren't a total failure...
My recollection is the seats with built in speakers were quite popular with the thieves. The cars were being stolen in Houston and abandoned... seatless.

The stock sound system was REALLY good. Immersive. For its time? Superior.
The Fiero was hamstrung by GM politics. It was to have had a turbo V6, and would have been faster than a Corvette. It was to be Pontiac's way of sneaking in a total sports car. . The powers that be would not allow a Pontiac that sold at about half the price of the 'vette to be a faster, better handling car so the mandated that I have the "iron duke" 4 cylinder...
Another GM opportunity squandered.
The Fiero GT had a NA 2.8L V6 140 HP. 1986-1988. A turbo would have made that a beast at 2600# If only it could have had the Buick 3.8L GNX engine
