I remember 20 years ago there was a huge to do with the explorer and the Firestone tires they came with. Something about spontaneous combustion causing the vehicle to flip.
Edit: AzDave47 jogged my memory, thx man!

The Fiero was hamstrung by GM politics. It was to have had a turbo V6, and would have been faster than a Corvette. It was to be Pontiac's way of sneaking in a total sports car. . The powers that be would not allow a Pontiac that sold at about half the price of the 'vette to be a faster, better handling car so the mandated that I have the "iron duke" 4 cylinder...

I am currently looking for a mint Fiero GT. Other than a 1984 Corvette, the Fiero was my dream car as a kid.
Unfortunately in the current climate, they are mostly going for crazy numbers on sites like "Bring a trailer"
I also did own a 1998 Ford Explorer with the "Bad" Firestone tires. It was complete BS and my tires were absolutely fine...but, Ford directed me to bring it to any tire shop I wanted and pick any tire I wanted to replace them. I picked some fine Michelin's.
Are you sure about that? I mean sure spontaneous combustion has always been associated with a human phenomenon but are you sure rubber can't spontaneously combust? I mean after all rubber is such an innocuous material...we put it on pencils too right? It could be a conspiracy. Maybe it was under our nose this WHOLE TIME. Rubber....spontaneously.....explodes.
Thank you for correcting an obvious facetious comment. I still think you should inspect the rubber on your pencils for safe measure.

Another GM opportunity squandered.
Not quite squandered, from Pontiac Fiero ashes Mary Barra’s career start as a Fiero Plant Engineer progressed to now GM CEO. I suspect she had a huge influence making our C8 finally what Zora dreamed. I had this ‘88 GT for 16 years and was fun to own though under powered.
partially due to conflicting tire pressure recommendations (Ford, Firestone).
Underinflated tires on hot Texas (Saudi Arabia, AZ etc) highway running at high speed...why all cars were mandated to have TPMS because owners could not be relied upon to check tire pressure per our government (idiots) and since we can't trust drivers to back up without looking, now backup cameras mandated..probably a lot more crap coming (adaptive cruise, lane change warning etc etc). Learn to drive and take responsibility when behind the wheel. Ok this rant shows how old I am.LOL
I had the same issue with Firestone tires. First, I had a separated tread on a snow tire in 1967 when I was in college. Then, they were recalled on my ‘77 Olds Cutlass, and later I had 2 separated treads on a Ford van. After the second one, I put Goodyears all around and never looked at Firestone again.
