teflon coating
Ceramic coatings have come into their own over the past 10 or so years, and while there is definitely some 'over-stated' marketing associated with them, they do indeed have many positive aspects.
Like many things, whether a ceramic is for your depends on your maintenance preferences and, more importantly, your expectations for the products. Some folks like wax, some sealants, some coatings and some enjoy the benefits of PPF (Paint Protection Film); there is no universal right or wrong answer but rather just what is right for *you*.
A note about the difference between true ceramic coatings and some spray sealants marketed as 'coatings'; in general if it's coming out of a spray bottle, it's a ceramic-infused sealant and not a genuine ceramic/quartz/glass coating.

There are some fantastic and easy to use coatings available to the DIY hobbyist and we prefer the Kamikaze line for ease of use and overall performance. ISM 1.0 is notable for its tendency to produce a deeper, wax-like glow as opposed the the more candy/sharp gloss of many coatings while Miyabi is a more sharp, reflective glow.
DIY or professionally installed, ceramic coatings can be very beneficial if your particular situation and personal preferences align with their strengths.

- A ceramic coating is "genuine ceramic/quartz/glass". This is not true. It is a polysiloxane coating. A molecule that contains Si and O but also organic groups, typically methyl groups.
- MOHS hardness of 9, i.e. hard as quartz/glass. Not true. The "9H" quoted on the bottle refers to pencil hardness, not MOHS hardness. Pencil hardness of 9H is approximately the same hardness as the catalyzed polyurethane clear coat used on modern cars.
Primary benefits of automotive ceramic coatings instead of wax coatings:
- It doesn't need to be applied nearly as often (it is more durable).
- It is highly hydrophobic (repels water). Might be more hydrophobic than wax.
I use it myself.
