Default Cold Start Question

After the 500-mile reduced red line went away, upon a cold startup (Car not driven for 24 hours) my 2022 Z51 never indicated a reduced redline until the engine warmed up like my C7 showed. I am assuming it's a software issue but before I go to the dealer do all 2022's have the reduced redline appear until engine temperature is approximately 165 degrees like in the C7.

Looked in the owner's manual but the only reference I could fine was in the pamphlet "Getting to Know Your 2022 Corvette Performance Features" on page 2.

Thanks

For a high performance engine the general rule is to not do more than 4,000 rpms until the car reaches operating temperature - such is the case with, even, my 34-year-old Ferrari. Makes little difference what the electronics show... warm it up... then get on it.

When you say, “warm it up” what engine temp would be considered warmed up?

My 2022 doesn't show a reduced redline until warmed up either. As soon as I start it the redline shows as 6500 as soon as I put it in drive or reverse.

Interesting. My 2021 Z51 3LT with 2500 miles does show a reduced redline until it is warm. I suppose they could have changed that for 2022, but it sounds like a software or sensor issue. Others with a 2022 need to weigh in.

There should be a yellow zone around 4-4500, or maybe even 5000 on start up. It goes away quickly on warm days.

A good idea is to just drive your car normal until you see the oil warm up. I usually like to see 140 degrees F or higher before going about 4000 rpm. Good rule of thumb no matter what kind of car you are driving.

As I mentioned above, my 2021 does show a reduced redline. And based on the reference guide for the 2022, it appears that the 2022 is supposed to do the same thing. If it is not, it would appear there is some issue.

This.

Commuting to work I never really paid attention to the redline. Anyway, this morning I watched... And this is exactly what happens with my 2022.... As the oil/engine warms up the redline raises.

The redline will switch over on it's own once it's warmed up...I want to say around 158 degrees engine temp.

Interesting - some here (even with the same model year car) say theirs does show a reduced redline until warmed up, others say not. My 2022 C8 Z51 HTC does NOT. Wonder what's going on?

I was not able to find anything in the Service Manual that would shed any light on exactly how the car adjusts the red line. Mine increases slowly after start up - it does not "switch". It gradually comes up to the full limit (about 6500) when "fully warmed up". But what does it measure? There's coolant temp, oil temp, and trans oil temp. There is also probably something that tells it when the CATs are full warmed up, because it adjusts timing at start up to facilitate that. But if it was any of those sensors, you would think that fault would be noticed by the car, or the driver. Makes me lean toward a software thing, but just guessing of course. I did not check, but the display changes with mode, but the displayed red line should be the same regardless.

When I was racing my engine builder's rule was you don't get on it until the oil temp was at least 150 F. FWIW

My AMG GTS different car but same principle, has an oil temperature gauge that displays oil temp in blue numbers then changes to white numbers when the oil temp is good to go full throttle. The change comes on at 156* F.

Where are you located? I’ve heard that in warmer climates other cars don’t reduce redline.
