Default Another HTC Problem

As I was pulling into my driveway and putting my top up the tonneau cover opened and I received the “service convertible top” message. Now the tonneau cover is in the full upright position and will not close. I tried disconnecting the battery and re-indexed the side wide windows. The “service convertible top” message is no longer displayed, but the top does nothing. Same thing for the rear window. Nothing.

Since purchasing this car I have always been concerned about reliability. After the 3 year bumper to bumper warranty is up problems like this could be very expensive to fix. I'll need to look into extending the warranty.

Since the tonneau cover is fully upright I cannot drive the car to the dealership. If I have a tow truck driver come it would not be any different if they are driving my car on the back of their flat bed truck with the top fully open. I am waiting for the dealer to call me back. I think I will drive the car to the dealer (~5 miles) early in the morning, unless the dealer or someone here on the forum has a better idea.

Car is a 2022 with 1200 miles.

OK-some strange stuff going on here. I went out and took a good look at the electrical connections, gears, fasteners, etc. Everything looked good. I wiggled the metal arms attached to the tonneau cover and there was a little slack in them, but nothing excessive. Then I thought that maybe I should try activating the top with the key as I wiggled the tonneau cover. Oddly enough the top slowly drifted down to the closed position. When I started the car there was a top not secure indication. I pushed the top control switch down in an attempt to complete the motion and got the indication that the motion was complete. Wow...

I was torn whether I should try putting the top up. There was always the possibility that I could wind up right back to where I started with the tonneau cover stuck in the upright position. I decided to give it a shot. THE TOP WENT UP AS IF EVERYTHING IS OK!!! The remote start works again too.

All I can think is that opening the top while going up the curb onto my driveway might have briefly caused one of the sensors to be momentarily misaligned while the cover was fully open. I will still take the car to the dealership on Tuesday to see if there is any information stored which would give a clue as to what caused this. Typically problems like this are more difficult to diagnose when everything is working as it should. Going forward I will definitely avoid raising and lowering the top while going up or down the curb into my driveway.

People come to forums like this with their problems. If you want to know what problems people have, you have come to the right place. But the risk is that prevalence of a problem can be exaggerated. Few people with problems post their lack of problems. "WTAF with these cars" is perhaps an exaggeration.

Should be ok to drive it below 31 mph since the manual says it can raised or lowered at speeds at or below that. Since you mentioned indexing the window, it sounds like already reviewed the trouble shooting sections of the manual, but here are some things you may have tried but did not mention:

1. Is your trunk secure?
2. Manual says the top wont operate with a low battery - you might try charging the battery.
3. Did you try operating it with the FOB? If the car got confused and thinks the tonneau is open in service mode, it may respond to the FOB to close it.
Below is an additional item from the manual to try:

6 motors and several moving parts. Since the nacelles went up I’d look for a loose bolt over a motor failure. Probably a simple fix if one can find the bolt.

This is NOT GOOD, and could be catastrophic if caught in one of South Florida's sudden monsoon downpour's, with top down-tonneau up, etc etc. Hope there is an on the spot, very quick fix coming fast from GM,

OP, please keep us advised of this insane condition!

Adding to post 7 - your dealer can access the diagnostic data for your car without having possession of the car. Ask them if they can see if there are any DTCs and what they mean. I think also you can call On-Star and they can tell you codes.

So was it a loose bolt like the other one?

There is very easy access to all the motors, cables and mechanisms. It should be easy to diagnose unless it's a SW problem.

@lion shf please don't misunderstand...this is a very serious problem for those who are experiencing it. I certainly would be pretty distressed if it was happening to my HTC. My point is that it can be a mistake to conclude that GM/BGA sucks globally from it as some are wont to do from a small sample size of reported problems.

100% get it but here in year 4 it’s troubling. This is a daily driver including an annual cross country DE to Los Angeles road trip. That happens with my wife in the car it’s my ***

I never should have driven one because it’s WAY more fun than the 718s I’ve tested

Sure. To me the concern is less that the unit was produced with this error - percentage-wise in a mass-produced vehicle, some are going to have defects - than it is the dealership's inability to readily correct the problem.

Cheap insurance to keep a poly tarp tucked away in the frunk! Tarps are under appreciated until you need one!

I think the previously discussed problem did not result in the tonneau cover being stuck in the open position. It sounded more like the roof panels being misaligned. With no pics we are only guessing. I don't recall anyone from ever saying their tonneau cover was stuck in the upright position. I searched the forum and found none.
As others have said, removing the waterfall cover to access the fuses is difficult. The pieces do not come loose easily and I was afraid I would break something. The more I think about it the more I doubt that it is the convertible fuses. Those fuses would not affect the remote start function. I have an OBD DTC code reader and there are no codes.
