Does anyone else get a metallic sounding squeal when driving around with the brakes not being applied? The sound is very similar to brake squeal, but it happens when the brakes are not applied. The squeal is short in duration (maybe .2 of a second), is not very loud, and is pretty consistent (but you need to really listen for it, e.g., windows down, stereo off, AC off or low, etc.). I have been assuming that it is brake dust, but wanted to see if anyone else has been experiencing this problem. Car is a Z51 with OEM bake pads. I pointed out to the service department when getting my first oil change, but they said they were unable to replicate the noise.
I have never heard of brake dust causing a metallic squeal. I have a Z51 with factory brake pads, and while the dust is way more than I would like, I do not have any squeals when driving.
Based on your post history you are tuned in to sounds (I am as well). Betting you are just more in tune to it than most everyone else and it's something normalization no one else hears

While you might be right, I have had squeaky brakes on a couple of my sports cars, so I am sensitive to sounds when they exist. I also have had other cars that generate a lot of brake dust with no squeals.
I think it is more likely he has something between one of his brake pads and rotor. I would take it to a different dealer or a brake shop to get it looked at by someone else.
This is actually not uncommon. Human hearing goes up to 20khz or so and then as you get older that limit goes down to 15-17kHz. I few years ago I was riding with my dad in his truck and he had brake squeal like crazy but he could not hear it because the frequency was too high. My wife could not hear it either but I could hear it clearly. Brake squeal can be low or high freq with the high freq stuff between 14-18khz depending on the amount of contact and material. Its very possible you are hearing that and others can't. If you are not on the brakes it is probably something else other than the brakes but I would check pad clearances with the brakes off and also check the parking brake pad clearances and also check for foreign objects. One tell tale sign is striped wear on a rotor that the other rotors do not show..
Another item that can squeal like this in high frequency is wheel bearings. Doubtful you have a bad one but it is possible. I had this on my previous R8.
There is a TSB on brake squeal on the C8 where the dealer can install anti-squeak grease on the pads. Mine were noisy when backing up and the grease helped a lot. Not sure if this is the issue for you here, but worth looking into.
