Real question: what actually functions without a subscription on the 2024? About the only things that I have found that work without a subscription is AM/FM and Bluetooth.
GPS... needs subscription. Doesn't even do basic functions at all without it.
Voice commands... needs subscription. Won't do any voice commands without one.
Held the voice command... didn't work.
Tried connecting Google on my car... says there is an error and won't log in.
I feel the car took 20 years backwards step in technology unless you buy the subscription. To be honest, I wish there was a way to hack the console and remove all of the useless functions. Meaning if you aren't going to give me a functional GPS, take away the option on the touchscreen for example. Diminishes the car in my opinion if you aren't subscribing, gives the appearance that it doesn't work.
I am/was going to order a 2024, however, after reading your post and others like it I think I'm going to keep my 2021. If I purchase a navigation system from GM I shouldn't have to pay more to use it.
Google Assistant works flawlessly for me. I enjoy OnStar and can afford $30 per month. Can't we all? You do have an $80K and up car........unless you absolutely despise OnStar.....
Yup, despise Onstar and any tech that follows and records the driver / car.

I hate the OnStar and the Mercedes ME. I see no need to pay $30 or more a month for something I don't use.
Well a bunch of us are having the same issues with our 2024 Silverados on the truck forum. Since the subscriptions ran out wireless Apple car play refuses to connect.
Makes me glad I have a 2023. My C6, C7 and C8 were all daily drivers so seamless technology is important. If GM insists on going this route they will lose loyal customers. I refuse to pay for a subscription for stuff that is already in the car that I've paid almost $100k for. Are you listening GM??

Some of us have principles and wont pay a dime for something we dont WANT. It is absolutely ridiculous to lock Nav behind a paywall subscription service when it can be had for free on cell phones. They shouldnt even be putting Nav in cars when everyone has a smartphone, but thats just me.
But if youre going to put Nav in the car, trying to force people into a google subscription to use it is digusting. I certainly hope 99.9% of buyers refuse to pay for it and send these morons running GM a lesson.
I wonder if this is a software matter that GM could enable without OnStar? I remember purchasing a RAM yrs ago, and it was NAV ready pending a one-time activation fee. They could unlock the feature via Uconnect as the HU had the necessary hardware.
If the whole new GM line is now practicing this fleecing, I’m surprised that more aren’t complaining… but I suspect more will as we get further into the MY.
It's worse than the OnStar plan issue, they are killing AndroidAuto and CarPlay and forcing geeks like me that like using our technology to use the CRAP on the infotainment screen.
10 steps in the wrong direction.
Paid subscriptions are just a money grab for a lot of Online events
the NFL wants you to pay to watch a game with Peacock
Nascar now wants you to start paying to watch prime races.
All this is another way to tap into everyones wallet.
We've been paying for equipment in cars that require subscriptions for years. The Sirius XM receiver and antenna isn't free to manufacture and install. We just got numb to it.

Now that would really suck. When i complained to the dealer he immediately went to the CarPlay work around as a solution.

Yes I absolutely despise OnStar annd GM is slowly moving in that direction anlso with their bone headed money grabs. I won’t be trading to a newer Corvette for sure. And now you know the rest of the story. Thanks for asking. Sam

This is different though. What was once free is a paid service now. Sirius has overhead to maintain the service. GPS is a fixed cost if you don't update it. Most people don't update it because they likely trade in their car way before the maps are so old they require it. And those who keep their cars long enough or buy used end up buying the bare minimum to keep it useful.
What's next, I have to tip GM so that I can use my keys to start the car?

Some Gm fanboys and sheep will accept any crap GM throws at them. I choose not to.
I haven't specifically used Carplay but I have Pandora and it works fine through my phone's bluetooth. That gets nerfed is voice commands and all GPS. You can use GPS on your phone but you lose the HUD navigation because the directions are coming through your phone and not the touchscreen.
Using GPS through my phone is fine but it is annoying having all this functionality locked away because of a subscription fee. Most of the locked away functionality has zero overhead for GM meaning it doesn't cost them a dime to enable it. It seems more like they are holding part of the car hostage until they get their fee. Other stuff like emergency response, map updates, traffic condition updates, etc has overhead and that makes total sense why that requires a fee.
Nope, all of that, voice control, HUD navigation updates, NAV, etc all work fine without a subscription if you use Android Auto or Car Play. The only thing I have found so far that does not work is starting google assistant via voice. IE 'Ok Google' command. You have to press the voice button to start. Seems that one could be fixed with an update or setting. It took me a while to figure out as GM is not forthcoming on information to work around their subscription sales but at this point I am actually pretty happy with the 2024 Infotainment system.
You only need an Onstar sub if you do not have a phone capable of Android Auto or CarPlay.

No, GM is NOT removing AA or CP from existing vehicles. They have stated they do not intend to include it in the future but as of now this has only been implemented on EVs. Not the Corvette or trucks. AA and CP work just fine on the 2024 Corvette. Please do further myths that are not true.
