Of course. The PDR includes a dedicated 5Hz GPS antenna to record the cars location. Has nothing whatsoever to do with OnStar. Likewise front lift.

Some people are confusing GPS with the navigation app.

So to confirm, if you don't have an OnStar subscription, Android Auto and Apple Carplay are dead?

NO. AA and CP both work just fine without paying an OnStar ransom.

Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay work in the ‘24 Corvette. GM eliminated both on ‘24 Blazer EV, and plans to phase them out in future EVs. Rumors are that they might expand this to non-EVs as well.

It’s the Nav that doesn’t work without subscription

And it has been reported that the built-in navigation will work without a subscription if the car is connected to a wi-fi hotspot for data.

Thanks however that is a work around involving downloading a different NAV app vs what used to come with the car. I hate tech and it’s not simple.

No, it has been reported to work with the built-in Google Maps. However you also have the option of downloading and installing a different nav app if you want.

Would you need an unlimited DATA plan to connect with Android Auto for the Nav?

I hate gm, this is maddening!!!

There are no “maps” in Google maps in the 2024 car. That’s the issue. So you are saying that if you load maps using some other data transfer method like connecting your car to your home WiFi, you can download maps from somewhere to be used with the GPS locator that the car does have.

Keep in mind you have to make sure you download the map you need, that covers your area, that works with the GPS, and that will be accepted by the cars hard drive. Personally, I think it suck’s and I can think of a hundred things I would rather do with my time than sit in my garage trying to sort through this stuff and wait for the data to download and try make it work.

it’s easier to by a refurb Garmin off Amazon for a $100….. it’s just so stupid to have this “marvelous” infotainment touch screen and it’s ONLY use is to show me what station the radio is on (which the DIC also tells me so the touchscreen is actually worthless). Thanks gm.

What Nav?

AndroidAuto connects your phone to the car. That doesn’t require a data plan.

For me its just the point of thinking you’re buying a car that has certain features then being hit with a price increase then getting the car and finding out they took features out but you can have them back if you let gm screw you out of a monthly payment.

I waited for eight months for my car. Built in on line a hundred times. Looked all all the features a thousand times. Gritted my teeth through the $3k price increase. Was able to dodge the second $2k price increase. To get a car that doesn’t have what is considered a standard feature in any high end car.

My perspective is gm believes subscription fees are a part of modern life and people (especially younger people who have Netflix, and other subscriptions) will not be concerned with paying gm subscription fees but I think gm is misreading the situation. When you sign up for Netflix there isn’t a $90k down payment.

Everyone I ask, or all ages, wants nothing to do with paying subscription fees for something their current car already has. They either think the car company is “ripping them off” or they “just don’t want another subscription” or “they just got rid of a bunch of subscriptions they weren’t using and are pissed at the money they were wasting” or they just “draw the line at car subscription fees”. I never get “sure what’s another $25 or $45 a month” for an answer.

The phone requires a data plan to run Android Auto. I don't keep track of how much data it uses but it could be a few GB.

When you pay the kind of money for C8 or Porsche, one expects a great entertainment system with great sound and a working GPS. Period. I love hearing great music AD/DC, Pink Floyd, George Strait, etc., listening to Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, running down the highway.

You seem to think the earlier system was great. I have it in my 2020 but rarely use it anymore. I run Google Maps on a CarPlay AI box connected to my car. The main advantage the earlier system has is it can be used when you are out of cell range but Google maps has been very good lately predicting when I'm going to go out of cell coverage and automatically downloading maps.

The routing in the 2020-2023 nav system is terrible compared to Google Maps or Waze. It has taken me 20 minutes out of my way on 100 mile trips if I wasn't paying attention.

The voice recognition is terrible and you have to structure your requests so the system understands you, it acts like I'm speaking Klingon. And it even has a hard time finding locations when you try to enter them manually. If it isn't entered exactly right (and what it thinks it is called) it can't find it and offers something completely non-sequitur. And there are many places it just doesn't know about. And the database is old even with the latest updates.

You still need an OnStar plan if you want real time traffic information and re-routing.

Honestly, if I had an option between my current system and the new system I'd choose the new system assuming it works like people have posted where you can use your phone's hotspot and have it work just like using it with the OnStar data plan.

Appreciate the input. I have no idea what the old system was like and also use my phone for NAV most of the time. It’s just gm tactics. Combined with a price increase and the lack of communication of the changes. I put a deposit on a 2023. Submitted a build for a 2023. The build was rejected and no reason was ever provided. Dealer had no more 2023 allocations so my order was bumped to a 2024.

I disagree that the in-car nav is worse than Google Maps or Waze. Waze and Google Maps are terrible on mapping city side streets. I can't tell you how many times these two apps had me going in circles and/or had me making unnecessary turns. One time I even had to call my office, and have my assistant look at an online map to get me out of the Waze endless loop.

The graphics are also terrible compared to the in-car nav in my 2021 C8. The in car nav shows nice pictures of upcoming freeway signs to get you in the correct lane. Waze and Google Maps look like something from the year 2000.

Waze and Google Maps always tell you to turn about 50 feet past the intersection, too, which is frustrating. If you have to make a left turn, and then an immediate right turn, forget about it with Waze and Google Maps. You are going for a scenic drive.

Speaking of scenic drives, you better download maps in advance for an area you are going that doesn't have cell service with Google Maps. I found this out the hard way one time out in the middle of nowhere. Fortunately, I found a local who could give me directions or I would have had to backtrack about 100 miles. This is not an issue with real in-car nav.

Waze and Google Maps will route you right into a freeway closures when there are other freeways that you could take with no closure. It's done this multiple times with me, and caused me to get home extremely late at night. My in-car nav routes me right around it. To me it is worth $9.99 a month for the real-time data to avoid these situations. I'd rather not pay anything, but time is money for me and it's not expensive with the right plan.

I will probably get a 2024 Z06, and I'm not happy that it doesn't have real nav.
