2024 on lockdown
The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
There are no “maps” in Google maps in the 2024 car. That’s the issue. So you are saying that if you load maps using some other data transfer method like connecting your car to your home WiFi, you can download maps from somewhere to be used with the GPS locator that the car does have.
Keep in mind you have to make sure you download the map you need, that covers your area, that works with the GPS, and that will be accepted by the cars hard drive. Personally, I think it suck’s and I can think of a hundred things I would rather do with my time than sit in my garage trying to sort through this stuff and wait for the data to download and try make it work.
it’s easier to by a refurb Garmin off Amazon for a $100….. it’s just so stupid to have this “marvelous” infotainment touch screen and it’s ONLY use is to show me what station the radio is on (which the DIC also tells me so the touchscreen is actually worthless). Thanks gm.
I waited for eight months for my car. Built in on line a hundred times. Looked all all the features a thousand times. Gritted my teeth through the $3k price increase. Was able to dodge the second $2k price increase. To get a car that doesn’t have what is considered a standard feature in any high end car.
My perspective is gm believes subscription fees are a part of modern life and people (especially younger people who have Netflix, and other subscriptions) will not be concerned with paying gm subscription fees but I think gm is misreading the situation. When you sign up for Netflix there isn’t a $90k down payment.
Everyone I ask, or all ages, wants nothing to do with paying subscription fees for something their current car already has. They either think the car company is “ripping them off” or they “just don’t want another subscription” or “they just got rid of a bunch of subscriptions they weren’t using and are pissed at the money they were wasting” or they just “draw the line at car subscription fees”. I never get “sure what’s another $25 or $45 a month” for an answer.

The routing in the 2020-2023 nav system is terrible compared to Google Maps or Waze. It has taken me 20 minutes out of my way on 100 mile trips if I wasn't paying attention.
The voice recognition is terrible and you have to structure your requests so the system understands you, it acts like I'm speaking Klingon. And it even has a hard time finding locations when you try to enter them manually. If it isn't entered exactly right (and what it thinks it is called) it can't find it and offers something completely non-sequitur. And there are many places it just doesn't know about. And the database is old even with the latest updates.
You still need an OnStar plan if you want real time traffic information and re-routing.
Honestly, if I had an option between my current system and the new system I'd choose the new system assuming it works like people have posted where you can use your phone's hotspot and have it work just like using it with the OnStar data plan.

The graphics are also terrible compared to the in-car nav in my 2021 C8. The in car nav shows nice pictures of upcoming freeway signs to get you in the correct lane. Waze and Google Maps look like something from the year 2000.
Waze and Google Maps always tell you to turn about 50 feet past the intersection, too, which is frustrating. If you have to make a left turn, and then an immediate right turn, forget about it with Waze and Google Maps. You are going for a scenic drive.
Speaking of scenic drives, you better download maps in advance for an area you are going that doesn't have cell service with Google Maps. I found this out the hard way one time out in the middle of nowhere. Fortunately, I found a local who could give me directions or I would have had to backtrack about 100 miles. This is not an issue with real in-car nav.
Waze and Google Maps will route you right into a freeway closures when there are other freeways that you could take with no closure. It's done this multiple times with me, and caused me to get home extremely late at night. My in-car nav routes me right around it. To me it is worth $9.99 a month for the real-time data to avoid these situations. I'd rather not pay anything, but time is money for me and it's not expensive with the right plan.
I will probably get a 2024 Z06, and I'm not happy that it doesn't have real nav.
