Yesterday I noticed my speed limit indicator wasn’t displayed in my instrument cluster. This was odd because I’ve been using a download map successfully for months. I doubled check my offline maps in google and it claimed I didn’t have any!
Fast forward to when I was back home connected to wifi. I tried to re-download a map, it failed without much explanation. Tried twice more, same outcome. Figured I’d check for a map update in the play store, sure enough there was one. As soon as it finished updating I went back to try downloading a map again and there was no need, my previously downloaded maps were visible again! Very strange behavior! Figure it might be useful to share for anyone having a similar issue.
Yea, I tried to download a huge map on my 2024 and it failed to download but it's there now. After I told Google maps to download the huge map, I was waiting inside the car for it to complete but it stayed on "0%" for a long time so I turned off the engine, and existed the car and went into my house thinking I'll try again later when I had more time to sit there and watch it. ~5 minutes later my car starts itself up unexpecting! The remote was in my pocket but I doubt I pressed the remote start button but can't be 100% sure as I don't consciously remember exactly what I was doing when I heard the car start itself up in my driveway. Not sure if it had anything to do with downloading a huge map area (IIRC, it was ~2.5GB or something in size). The next time I drove the C8 there was a Download failed message so I assumed the map failed to download but it's there or maybe it's partially there(?) -- not sure. I'll have to see if it is a partial download or if it completely downloaded somehow.
Probably a good idea to double check the map app is up to date before trying again. No idea about the starting by itself but the rest of it sounds like what happened to me.
As far as big map download, I have all pf New England saved so I won’t get caught without coverage, you should have no problem getting that to save for you.

I'm in MA too. IIRC, I sized my map to include something like this:

I don’t remember if I included NYC in mine or not but definitely around there up to nearly all of Maine, definitely more than enough to cover casual day trips.
I have a 2024 2LT HTC since Oct-2023.
I live in Massachusetts.
I thought I would test my Google maps.
I entered 1757 Pearl St, Nashville TN and my system routed and allowed me to start the trip. 1 day 1 hr
Can't everyone do this? I've had the car 7 months, will I loose the Google maps?

Are you paying for a data plan and/or was the car connected to wifi when you entered the address? I have an 1LT so idk if the higher trim level get free data longer but mine stopped around a month or two after purchase.

Is your early 2024 using the new Infotainment system? The reason for downloading maps on the 2024 is the 2024 doesn't use a static map database that is provided by a removable storage device. Downloading maps on the 2024 allows Google maps to work when Onstar or a WiFi connection is not available.
StfDrmsRMadeOf, I did not signup for any plans( Google or OnStar), except I just called in for the $5/month SiriusXM.
My car did have access to my home wifi. If I wasn't home, I would not be able to enter a far off address? I will test this sometime.
x86Guru, I do have the Google Maps system, not the 2023 or early GM maps. (I wish I had the older GM maps systems! )

In that case, google likely downloaded the route via the WiFi connection.

@Ron_Attleboro_MA This is likely what happened. Test it sometime while you’re out and about. It’s an easy fix though, downloading a map only takes a few minutes and it’s good for a year (until an update happens like I just found out).
FYI:
( see previous posting #6)
I stopped out away from my house today. I entering the address in Tennessee.
The screen showed "Loading Route", I waiting a few minutes, no change.
I drove around for another 30 minutes, no change.
I pulled into my garage, and within a minutes, the route updated and would allow to start the trip.
So WiFi is needed!
I guess I could use my phone as a 'HotSpot' connection. This might use a great deal on phone data, go over my 4Gig limit.
My guess is I would be better off using Android-Auto and phone Google Maps, or maybe Waze.

I hope GM drops Google Maps!!
Android Auto with GMaps or Waze won't use any less data than using a Wi-Fi hotspot on your phone for the car's GMaps. I use my phone's hotspot for GMaps and it doesn't use that much data however streaming music does.
If an internet connection is required for Google Maps to do longer routing, I guess I should be OK.
I had to accept a 3 year regular OnStar plan that was built into the price of the car, so that would be internet access option 1.
I also use Android Auto connected to my phone which has a large US/Can bandwidth monthly unlimited plan, which would be internet option 2.
Option 3 is wifi, either at home, or "out there".
I have noted once or twice that the maps function lacks some detail, or the speed limit icon disappears from the DIC.
Next opportunity, I put the car in P(ark), and long press the steering wheel call end button to reboot the Infotainment System, which usually resolves the maps/icons issues. The Infotainment System is really a small Android computer, like your phone or Chromebook, that gets cluttered with cyber junk, just like phones and laptops.
A reboot usually helps clean it up/out.
There is no need for internet to use the navigation, you just need to download a map once a year while connected to your home wifi. I can’t imagine how it would easier to use a hot spot or trust your phone navigation. If I need navigation there is a very good chance I’m somewhere without reliable cell service.

My experience with GMaps on a phone without internet is that while navigation works you can't use voice to search for a destination without internet. Will the car let you use voice commands to search for destinations without internet?

I think for "on the fly" navigation, or anything else "Google", including voice commands, some sort of active internet connection is required. I've tried voice search while in areas with sparse cell tower availability, and have been told "sorry, I'm offline right now try again" by Hey Google.
2024 navigation seems to have many quirks and what works for some doesn't for others. It's a very long learning curve, at best. Trial and error?

I've been able to manually enter an address into GMaps without internet but voice commands wouldn't work without internet.
However on my 2020 with the OEM navigation I've been able to enter destinations by voice without internet (but I don't subscribe to a data plan through OnStar).
Yes voice commands require a data plan from GM/Onstar, maybe a hot spot would work but I have no personal experience. I personally don’t enjoy speaking to computers and do not use voice commands for anything, maybe this is why I don’t mind the new navigation.
I've used voice commands since my first Garmin 855 GPS unit. I liked that I could change settings and run routes without taking my eyes off the road or hands off the wheel.
I like the 2024Google nav and Info system but it can be a little quirky. Also, I have nothing similar to compare it to. My 2017 MB Sprinter isn't nearly as "AI" or complicated. It's Neanderthal by comparison.
