I have a 2024 2LT C8. When using the NAV, I get this message that it requires a subscription to operate. My question is 2 fold, how much does it cost, and what does it do for me?
The NAV appears to work without the subscription. So what difference will there be with the subscription?

IMO, the OnStar subscription is too expensive for what little value it provides, you can pay yearly instead of monthly for a slight reduction.
You will have to so a bit of research to see if the other features in the OnStar subscription besides NAV are of any value to you.

The minimum subscription needed is just a data plan via OnStar, but there are workarounds. You need it to download the map data that supports the Nav on 2024 and later models. Earlier models had an on board map. You do not. The workarounds to obtain the necessary map data do not require a subscription. One involves using you cell phone in hotspot mode, and the other involves downloading map data while you are connected to your local internet enabled WiFi in you garage/driveway. Others will have to provide the details of that.
I have a 2021. If I had a 2024 I would be trying the workaround and not the subscription. 2025 models come with 8 years of OnStar.
As mentioned, if you use CarPlay, you can run Waze on your phone - that does not need an OnStar subscription.
Some posts indicated that the Google Maps that is installed on the nav system blocks GPS download of maps without a subscription. One workaround was to delete the pre-installed Google Maps and then download the generic Google Maps app that has the ability to do the maps without a subscription.
For 2024, you get 3 years of Onstar basic, which included connectivity for any google apps on your system, including navigation. Your data plan is working, but Onstar has a glitch with these systems. You need to call the Onstar number, explain that you have a 2024 with 3 years of Onstar basic, but you are getting prompted to update your plan. I have a 2025 Tahoe and when the 3 month trial ran out, got the same thing. Additionally, it took them two weeks to get it working when we bought it in March, I had no nav whatsoever, unless I connected the vehicle wifi to my phone hotspot, then everything worked, but I was still getting prompted to upgrade my plan.
Fast forward three months, I let the 3 month full onstar trial expire. Sure enough, started getting the prompts again, but Nav was working. Called Onstar, they are aware of the issue and will call back in 3-5 business days. There is some reset they need to do on your profile. They do call back so just waiting for them to call, they also had to do this back in March to get it working in the first place.
Once your three year trial expires, as mentioned, just use your phone hotspot as all the google apps need is an internet connection to function.
When I bought my C8, I was getting similar messages for Sirius XM. I use my AA navigation so never tried the car nav.
I called OnStar and they deactivated OnStar all together from the car. The messages went away.
I eventually changed my mind and subbed with them basically for the data plan. Yeah, $50 is a bit much, but I was told that 24s and 25s and maybe 23s are cheaper at $23.99 monthly for some reason. Mine is a 21.

Your 2021 has an on board map on an SD card. You do not need a data plan for your on-board Nav system to work. I use it all the time on my 2021. And, no, I am not confusing it with CarPlay and Waze hosted on my phone - but I do use that too. I have never had an OnStar subscription.

Now that I have subbed to Onstar, I have 3 nav systems in my car. AA, OnStar (which I think is second best), then the native SD nav.
The Onstar Nav appeared or I've noticed it after I subbed to OnStar. I never used the native Nav so I don't know much about it. I was using the AA nav instead.
I am thinking the OP has a car with a previous Onstar Nav sub that has been canceled and he is trying to access that one instead on the SD driven Nav. Guessing here.
The XM data error messages I was getting when I bought the car was because previous owner was subbed to Onstar, and Onstar controls your XM once subbed. It also controls my Pandora. My Pandora uses the car's data plan instead of my phone.
3 years Premium for a 2024. Included in the price, of course.
In Canada, eh?: Sorry should have qualified my post.
Android Auto also provides real time navigation, using the data connection of my android phone, afaik.

Hmm, I got 1 month only 30 days for my Feb 2024 3LZ $130,000 E-Ray! Made no difference what you paid or interior level. Mine said 30 day trail. I was getting Road Speed limit until the 30 days were up (I did cancel,) then it went away! BTW two weeks ago I called OnStar to see if the 8 year free OnStar Basic was retroactive to 2024. Gal checked and said NOPE it was part of the 2025 price NOT 2024!
With the help from @StairStep I installed a workaround. Took ~2 hours, see Pic I made on the steps
PS: I was getting the same message "Need Subscription" when I tried to use Google NAV. So for ~17 months been using WAZE for NAV. BUT few weeks ago tried a member suggestion. When message came up I Just pressed Dismiss. They Google NAV worked. The advantage I like is it displays NAV map in HUD as you near a exit on an interstate etc. It's probably using my 17 month old saved Google Map I loaded (see above) but for what I use it for it will be fine. IF I needed an UpToDate Map I'll use WAZE!
