Default Keeping the front camera on while driving

I ran across a thread that said someone was able to keep their front camera on or at least was trying to keep it on while driving. I cannot find that thread anywhere.

While I was sightseeing over the weekend, I got on a narrow road that just could just barely fit two cars side by side. I tried to turn on the front camera, but a popup said can't use the camera while driving. I was afraid of driving off the road because of a huge drop off. I just stopped and let oncoming traffic pass. I was able to turn the camera on after I stopped but as soon as I got rolling again it turns off. It would be nice if I could just leave the front camera on.

Any thoughts?

It should come on if you stay below 6 MPH.

I didn't know the exact speed where it turned off. I guess I kept exceeding that speed.

I can't understand why it's more of a safety hazard than anything else on the screen.

You have to push the camera button before you exceed 8 or 9 MPH and the camera will stay on. You can then switch to rear view if you so choose. It has been a while since I've done it. I cannot remember if you have to have the camera already running and then hit the button before reaching 9 MPH or not (I think you do). It would be nice if you could just turn it on at will so when the camera for the rear-view mirror is stowed with the top down, you could activate the back-up camera. My 2025 GMC truck allows activation of front or rear cameras at any time. I'd really like the front camera to automatically come on below 3 MPH so it would activate while parking.

Fantastic!
I'll give it a try the next time I get the vette out.
Thanks

No PDR in the car? Mine is set to record when the ignition is activated.

PDR won't help the poster--he wanted a real-time view of the edge of the road. You can't view the PDR while driving, IIRC.

My mistake. I only use front camera view for parking the car in the garage

I want to look three miles ahead when I’m driving. Not at the screen.

There's a reason the front camera doesn't activate while driving.

...and what would be that reason, anymore than maps or anything else that appears on the screen.

The front camera typically turns off while driving for safety reasons. If you saw someone manage to keep it on, it might have been a modification or specific to their car model. Check your vehicle's settings to see if there’s an option to enable it while moving, but generally, it’s not allowed for safety purposes.

Not to be disrespectful but the rear camera turns off too. I guess it's too dangerous to see it on the info screen but it's OK to see it on the rear-view mirror.
I would simply like to know exactly where the edge of the road is when the road is narrow.

Get a camera with a divorced monitor. Mount the camera on the lower front of your car and the monitor above your screen. Then you can have it on all the time.

That would work for sure, but it really isn't that important. Basically, if I can do it simply, I'll do it otherwise no big deal.

My PDR is always on. Too many crazy and distracted drivers out there, having a recording of every time I'm driving could be very worthwhile should I get into an accident or encounter a nutty driver.

Well I tried every combination of button pressing and different speeds. No luck at all. I'm not sure you can even turn it on until you fully stop. It's hard to keep it under 6mph to test it. I give up.

The thread you are referring to indicated: Put the car in reverse, when you shift into drive the front camera will come on. As you start forward, you need to time when you push one of the camera view buttons, before it shuts off, but not right after you start rolling forward. If you time it right you can then select any view, forward, back, back wide etc. I find I can only get the timing right about 30% pf the time and I don't try to get it very often.

Oh well it was just a thought. Too much stuff to do to make it work. I only needed it for narrow roads once in a while.

Here is the procedure from another thread that I have used. I have not tried it recently, but at the time (2022 I think) when I tried it on my 2021 it worked fine. Looks like it can be done for either front or rear view. Don't know if it still works - software updates might have changed it.

When you start to drive it will likely switch back to front camera. If it does just hit the far left rear camera icon and you will have a constant view of the rear camera while driving at any speed. I did this the other day. Worked fine.
