Shifter Problem
The day I bought my ‘79, I had 2 pretty big problems that I spent all night trying to figure out. The first problem I’m sure those who have been around will find quite funny; I couldn’t get my he key out of the slot. I was under the car looking for levers and spinning the steering wheel, even google was useless. I debated disconnecting the battery and a spark plug and calling it a night before I found that stupid lever..
The second problem I still don’t understand. For the first week, the only way to get the gear shifter to move was by pushing down on the center button (it didn’t really move) and then pulling up on the round wooden handle. Then after a week, the wooden handle stayed in place and all I needed to do was push the button down, as I assume it was designed. It has since stayed working properly most of the time, but will occasionally go back to the original condition. I haven’t taken it all apart to look yet, but has anyone else had this problem?
