Magnetic ride control longevity, replacement questions
Was originally planning my build with just the standard Z51 (already have an S2000 with aftermarket coilovers, so anything else feels like a Cadillac to me) but now considering the Z51 magnetic ride option. I usually keep my cars for a very, very long time. So when one of the shocks goes bad and needs replacement, could you replace just one? does it have to be by the pair (front/rear?) to keep things equal or replace all 4?
If replacing one, does the ECU account for the other absorber rate if it is more worn than the other?

3 of my 4 shocks failed around 45k miles on my 2014 C7 Z51 so I went ahead and replaced them all as a complete set. I did the work myself, but the shocks alone came to a little less than $1,300. With that said, I ordered magnetic ride again on my C8 because the system is just that good!
Enjoy your S2k, I used to have one back in the day

One was completely shot, it was clunking over bumps and leaking fluid puddles on my garage floor. Two others were entirely wet and gross due to seeping fluid. One was bone dry.
The MSRC shocks are covered under the Chevrolet Protection Plan if you are really concerned.
In general, the MSRC shocks rarely fail. But I find interesting that when people report failures they seem to be more than 1 shock. I would be interesting to find out what causes that.
45k miles does seem a bit premature... The cost doesn't sound excessive for replacement compared to german marques but at least it seems everyone speaks highly of this option.
I just spent $5K on a set of Ohlins Coilovers for my Porsche.... Corvette MSRC is both the most effective Street/Track setup you can get, but also CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP. If you want to fiddle, you can buy a DSC controller.
Just got my car shipped to me, took the chance and may have lost. Ride is harsh and got it on a lift today, both front and 1 rear shock are leaking. Debating sticking with the mag ride or swapping out as the tech said many he's worked on do. This is my first Vette and I heard great things about the MRSC, very disappointing day.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Car is a 2016 with 24,300 miles on it. Any chance in hell it's under warranty?

You're out of warranty unless you have a GMEPP extended warranty.
Leaking shocks won't create a harsh ride. If the ride is harsh even in Tour there is something else wrong. If the shocks are out of fluid there would be no damping. And if the MSRC wires get disconnected the shocks go dead soft.
When you say leaking, are they wet or dripping? It's normal for shocks to weep and collect dust.
There is also a software upgrade from GM (costs about $350) that provides a better ride
Is the car a base Stingray, Z51, Z06, or Grand Sport? The Z07 package also has a harsher ride.
RVi thanks for the link, I'll read through it shortly. Very interesting to you you 2 mention ion it goes very soft, they may not be bad then.
RKCRLR the ride is harsh, almost feels like its bottoming out in the front. Appears to be lowered as far as it'll go, was just about to search how that's done so I can raise it up at least an inch. It's a base model, non z51. Michelin fronts, Toyos rear 19/20 setup.
As far as I can tell, the fronts have the wiring up top plugged in. Haven't looked at the rears, nor so I yet know where to look, but the rear I don't think hits as hard. 3 of the 4 are oily, no drips on my garage floor.

And what's the easiest way to find out if it's had the software update? Can I call with my vin or does it need to be verified with the dealers scanner?

A dealer should be able to find out by VIN since this upgrade is only available from a dealer. But it sounds like you have some other things to get sorted out first. If the car has been lowered it is quite possible it is bottoming out. If there is something wrong with the MSRC system you would probably be getting some error messages on the dash.
It is also possible (but not probable) that the car has a DSC Sport controller for the MSRC. If so, someone could have messed up the settings. You'd have to pull the controller to look at it or the dealer may be able to tell using their diagnostic scanner.
You'd probably have better luck if you post in the C7 section of the forum.
Thanks man, I will likely do that if I can't figure it out soon. Just noticed the front Michelin super sport ZP's appear to have a 2015 date on them (2515) and I have another set track wheels that came with the car which are Nitto 555 G2's and only a 2016 date lol best/easiest process of elimination I can do this weekend and it's free so wth. 245/45-18 gives me an extra 1/2" or so of sidewall and were the tires that were driven on full time so may be a bit softer. Current set I believe he said had been in storage for the last 3 years but those were the ones I wanted the car transported and tied down with vs risking the Weld wheels and think they've hardened.
Hoping it's simething that simple!

Well the other tires made a night and day impact on drive quality! I went for a drive where I experienced that harsh bottoming out feel and it was Way less jarring! So next up Monday I'm going to call my local GM dealer and have them run the vin to see if its had the software update and do it if not. And I have a new set of wheels ordered for the wide body rear I plan to do over the winter and see how much more new tires will also help.
Thank you both for the assistance with this, I was really starting to feel like I got shafted.

ps to the OP, my apologies for what might seem like a high jacking of your thread, it wasn't intended to be. 🍻
