Default What would it take to...

I have looked around and can't find an answer to this completely though there were some estimates thrown out. What would it take to get a C8 to go 200mph in a mile?
  • I'm thinking the first thing to do is improve your drag by removing aero like Z51 or high spoiler.
  • Lightweight wheels and tires would likely help
  • Probably need to seal up seams and probably block some of the front inlet to force more air over than through the radiator
  • Horsepower estimates seem all over the place. The car can do 197mph but how long does it take to get there is the question.
    • In a 1 mile race, it seems like 550RWHP won't get you there but that was with different cars. Though if that holds true for the C8, NA doesn't have a prayer.
    • 800RWHP seems to be the magic number but again, not sure with a C8

Im at around 166mph in the mile in normal non glory run air (+1500da).

Stock z51.

The aero creates significant drag. Yes thats low hanging and may get you 5mph.

Dropping 100lbs is easy. After that it gets expensive.

I think you'd still need another 200hp.

Cadillac claims the CT5-V Blackwing has a top speed "greater" then 200 mph on the track, with 668 hp.

You can aero and lighten all you want and it will help but if you really want to hit that mark, you are going to need MOAR power. As in, forced induction. May God have mercy on your DCT.

Yep. Need cubic horsepower for sure. I figure about 900-950 rwhp would do it....maybe. Reason's behind this guess below.....

Least whp I saw to hit 200 in a mile is a 997 Turbo with a claimed 720 whp. Many with more hp went slower. Aero is a big deal above 150 mph as you can see from the McLaren Senna "only" hitting 187 with 789 hp or the 173 mph 797 hp challenger Redeye.
C7 ZR1 makes about 660-680 rwhp and did 191 mph.

Lets use the GT-R as an example: 620 whp GT-R does 184 and a 1100 whp does 214 mph. That averages 199 mph and 860 rwhp. Since we know drag increases with the square of speed we can guess the 860 rwhp "guess" is a little low and the all knowing internet says coefficent of drag is 0.32 for C8 and 0.26 for GT-R so surprisingly the chunky looking GT-R is actually slicker.

Your thinking was right about what I was researching but there was no way to really know. Even 1/4 mile data doesn't represent mile speeds close enough. I will say that the C8 Z51 gearing does not lend itself to a 200mph run very effectively. You hit 200mph at redline in sixth gear where power starts to taper off. You could shift but then you drop down to 5100rpm which you will very likely have less power than at redline.

Seems FI is the only way you get to 200mph in a mile. bhvrdr has given the best data I have found so far on a stock C8 with Z51. His speed looks like the car shifted into sixth gear and was right around 5400rpm. Based on dynos, all engine build (heads, intake manifold, TB, intake, headers, catback)... might get you in the 185-190mph range. And that is a really big might (I think it will be closer to 180-185mph if you have helpful air and good traction). That last 15-20mph will require a really darn good tune (E85), possibly injectors, and cam/lifters (and even then... maybe) or FI.

The standing mile is way different than top speed. Depending on gearing, weight, aero, etc, you're going to need a solid 800-1000whp to go 200 in the standing mile. A car like a C6 ZR1 with the shorter ratio 5th & 6th can hit 200 with around 800whp if conditions are right, but most C5/6/7 need a solid 1000whp. I'm going to bet that the C8 will need 1000whp to guarantee 200 in the mile.
