While you don't necessarily need to have a dealer install our system, you will need to go a Chevrolet dealer after install in order to have your valve actuators recalibrated according to GM Document ID 5406413.
...and for the DIYers out there, this $119 scan tool does the trick too!

can you please explain what you did. I assume that you get and error message and you clear it. Correct?

That scan tool is capable of the AFM/NPP exhaust valve relearn procedure, just like the dealership would do. Run the process after exhaust install and you're set.

The MM Act protects you if you use an oem equivalent aftermarket part. It's there to keep dealerships and manufacturers from becoming monopolies and requiring you to buy replacement parts from them.

In the case of performance parts that claim to change the performance of other OEM parts this is different.

As you said, the dealership should reasonably be able to convince a judge that your aftermarket part contributed to the part failure or "reduced it's lifespan". The wording in the actual act. This "shouldn't" happen with a Borla catback imo. But that's just my opinion.

In reality what can happen if the manufacturer perceives your aftermarket performance part contributed to the part failure,?

1. they will deny your warranty claim.

2. At this point you can wave a largely irrelevant MM Act printout at them but chances are they are already extremely familiar with the MM Act.

3. Next you can appeal to them. Contact your ftc, ctc etc.

4. Next you can have a hundred dollar lawyer letter written.

5. Next you take them to court. You had better come with your own engineers that are more believable to the judge than theirs are.

This is going to cost you A LOT of money btw.

And if you lose.... which you may very well do if your own performance parts advertising claims to alter OEM engine performance and if their engineers appear credible....then you will be paying for the repair and several thousand in legal and expert witness fees.

........

All that said the Borla exhaust is the safest to go with imo

They are very careful to make ZERO written claims of horsepower increases in their advertising. It's no wonder why that is. Smart decision.

They also have a GM approved version which is likely arguably quite similar in design as the S and Atak.

There really "shouldn't" be an issue with a Borla catback but no aftermarket PERFORMANCE manufacturer that doesn't have written approval from the car manufacturer can say their product will not impact a warranty claim.

Even GM says it may....in writing...

That said, since Borla themselves did say in writing that their product will not cause a warranty claim issue you are now covered.

This is quite frankly awesome of them.

If you do have a claim issue I would ask Borla to step in as they claim their product will not encounter one.

If anything it's a great reason to choose them.

It's pretty simple and says it right in your owners manual. Any modifications you risk warranty claims. If you are installing an actual GM accessory you are fine. Odds are it's not going to be a problem but if it is good luck fighting a multi billion dollar company. They will laugh at you.

I guess the million dollar question is if the gm borla sounds good enough plus the peace of mind VS the type s and a little bit of risk...

Not sure..

We have a 2023 Rubicon in the garage too (also modified, of course). The 2024 RubiconX is definitely the one to buy now! I spent the first 27 years of my life in Minnesota (then another 2 in SoDak) so enjoy... LOL

Does anyone know what if any horsepower gains are realistic with either Borla or Corsa vs the standard Z51 exhaust?

Borla privately told me that +12whp is their real-world average gains seen during their R&D testing (GM & S-Type are the same in this regard). They saw some outlier hero runs of 20+ whp gains. Weight savings is -15 lbs (same as S-Type).

Corsa claims +18whp and -16 lbs., but no clue if their +18 is an average or cherry picking the hero pull.

They told me the same. They said realistically, 18-20, but 12 was the number they were sticking with since it was always repeatable.
