The funny thing is the car drove perfectly well, so I got a good chance to try it and compare with my car (which was my intent). If I had owned it and someone had a small mishap to cause a dent like that on that cross-member, I'd leave well alone. Ripping that all apart would be the last thing I would do. On your last point, I cannot be sure, but getting the request for $890 10 minutes after the Host uploaded his return photos, along with the suggestion it would cost me at least $2500 through Turo, made me suspect that his intentions were at least questionable. To have the number in mind he would have to either have the quote in hand or something else.

The procedure for replacement of that part is in the manual I have, but it does not have an illustration. But before it is removed, one of the first actionable steps in the procedure is remove front floor panel. And that procedure is big one. It requires removal of most of the interior.

That seems to be a very substantial piece of work. I can only speak for myself, but there is no chance I would risk damaging the integrity of the car (and creating squeaks and rattles inside) to replace a part of the car that was not visible and was still performing its purpose perfectly well. That would be illogical. Given the amount of work required, it strongly implies the $890 the owner asked for would be insufficient to do the job, so I am left wondering why he would be prepared to settle for that, if he felt I was truly liable.
