Default Transmission Park

I jacked up the rear of my car to change the oil. While it was up I was able to rotate the wheels to clean the inner portion of the wheel barrels.
This is while the car was in park. Both wheels rotated the same direction.
Why are the wheels able to rotate while in park?

That's the way differentials work. Most cars will do the same thing if both wheels are able to rotate freely.

Differentials (without positraction) will allow the wheels to turn in opposite directions when they are off the ground.
What I don't understand is when I turned one of the wheels, the other rotated in the same direction.
