Has anyone else had this issue tracking the C8 with the track alignment? Clearly did one too many sessions, but quite a bit of rubber on the tires before the inner surface exploded.
Mostly left hand turns? I've worn out the inside on mine with the full track alignment. I've assumed it was from dragging the inside rear around turns its slip angle. Pictures show that only that portion of the inside tire is on the track in turns.
Haven't seen that. Seems odd as there is a lot of tread depth in the middle of the tire. I'd check the alignment. I run full GM track alignment except zero toe front and back. I keep the alignment whether on street or track. I'd investigate fully. Faulty tire possible?
Thanks guys for the responses. Tire is the Falken RT 660, which I had good luck with until that point (for a street tire). I have the stock track alignment (specs since reconfirmed by a GM master tech). When I took the wheels off the car, the other side rear also had significant wear and was about to let go. I think the issue is I simply did too many days on the tire, and they were stored in below freezing temps in my shed over the winter, which I won’t do again. It is strange how quickly though they corded (over the course of one track day) given what appeared to be a lot of rubber on them the morning of the event.
Could your running tire pressure be a contributing factor? From the picture, both sides show significant wear along with a thin strip in the middle. Maybe too much tire pressure? How do the wear patterns look to previous tire sets?
cold 23 front, 24 rear and hot mid 30’s which are consistent with the GM track prep guide.
And as far as I am concerned the GM track prep guide is for a factory tire. Once you go to something completely different all that data goes out the window and you are on your own to figure it out.
I would get at least a laser temp gun and watch your temps across the tire and adjust PSI to get them consistent.
Again, to me it looks like not enough pressure for THAT TIRE. Whatever the OEM run flats will like is completely different than what a non run-flat 200tw RT660 will like. Everything I am reading on the RT660 is that it likes a bit more pressure than other tires.
Around my shitty town, people would drive on that.
Hope you get 'er figured out. Maybe try some Pilot Sport Cups?
😀I’ve been track driving and instructing for a while, and typically drive on Goodyear Supercar 3R’s. They were tough to find in the sizes I needed last year for the C8. I’ve purchased the new Hoosier Track Attacks which should be good. I overdrove the street tire… too many sessions and lots of threshold braking. As others have noted, I think with the significant camber in the track alignment and the engine weight over the rear, wear is concentrated on the inside edge. I like the Goodyears over the Michelins - they tend to not lose as much grip over multiple laps once hot IMO if you haven’t tried them.
