A guy in my car club said he launched his C8 in manual 1st gear forgetting it was in manual and didn't let off the gas until 50 or so.He said it didn't seem to change any gears once it redlined. I told him I thought it should have changed gears even though in manual mode. He isn't certain it might have at least gone into 2nd but he's pretty sure it didn't.
So, I'm curious how the transmission should behave in a situation like this. Does it remain in 1st until the engine blows or should it change gears to prevent it from harm?
I told him, I didnt think any damage was done given he backed off around 50-60 even though he never changed gears after letting off the pedal until about 30 mph when he realized his mistake.
I think he said he's put on over 1k miles since then and hasn't had any issues.
Rev limiter kicks in, prevents the car from speeding up any further, doesn't damage anything. Have done this a few times where I "forget" to manually shift at the track and hit the redline, and car slows.
In permanent manual mode (button on console) it will bounce off the rev limiter and not shift. In temporary manual mode (engaged by pulling the paddle in Auto) it will upshift to the next gear.
What everyone else said; in manual it will bounce off the rev limiter.
Secondly, there is no way anyone is hitting 50mph in a Stingray/E-Ray in first gear on a stock tune.
I have my rev limiter raised to 7200RPM's and can only hit 42mph in first before the limiter kicks in.
Its in the manual too. And, also, in Manual shift mode, it will also downshift as necessary as you slow. Note that even in manual mode, if you hold it against the rev limiter long enough it will eventually upshift. No one should be doing that, of course. And although as pointed out the rev limiter is supposed to protect the engine, the wording in the manual about eventually up shifting to "protect the engine" seems to suggest that it might be harmful if that condition was prolonged.

Any expert opinions out there?
Its doubtful that he was going 50 in first gear, and if he was, then yes it could have done some damage.
For the non-Z car, 50 mph is about 8780 rpm in first, and 5350 in second - give or take. For the Z-car, 50 mph is about 9286 in first gear, and 5625 in second gear.
