Lots of cooling - for real summer track use
DCTs are heavy
Chassis engineered for top out use and higher power variants.

Part of it is money.
I am a retired aircraft engineer (mostly business turboprops and jets, where weight is even more important.) Management consistently declined to state a figure of how many dollars could be spent to save a pound. The ideal is less cost and less weight, but that combination is not realistic a lot of the time..

3,434 pounds is dry weight. If that were curb weight we'd be in great shape!

C8 Z06 coupes are more or less 3,650 lbs for a Z07 up to about 3710 lbs. Convertibles add about 90 pounds. Why is there so much confusion about this?

C&D had the C8Z Z07 3LZ with carbon fiber wheels and all fluids at 3666#. The Cup2R tires are lighter than the PS4S tires. The lightest C8Z would be a 1LZ, Z07 with carbon fiber wheels, Cup2R tires, CCBs and with fluids would be about 3600#. The 3434* is dry weight. Without coolant, oil, DCT fluid and gas you would be hard pressed to get out of your driveway with it that way.

The rules pretty much restrict you to keeping the equipment that came on your car. I had a C5 that almost never touched a street because it lived on a trailer. I noticed after a while that my radio had quit working. I was sorely tempted to tear it out, but I couldn't do it because the rules didn't allow it.

There is a market for stripped down stock cars for people like me. How big of a market, I don't know, but I'd see a lot of cars on weekends that were used almost exclusively for autocross and sometimes track events, so if Chevrolet offered a car that was substantially lighter than the usual fare, I imagine that they would sell a fair number of them.
I thought we were talking about racing. Last time I drove around cones in a parking lot I was getting my driver license.

I agree it's heavy but using the 991.2 GT3 as a comparison it's 8 inches longer and 7 inches wider (1 inch lower)...
Haha! Not even close.

Why GM ever put that "dry weight" out there is beyond me. I see that listed for motorcycles all the time but it seems like a stupid thing to do when it's hundreds of pounds for a car. Intent was probably to cause a bit of confusion to distract form the porky curb weight because they knew they'd get savaged for it. Turns out, the car is great despite the weight.

Chevy did it because that is the way the Euro cars that it competes with in performance report the weight of their cars.

Correct! It is also why the weights posted by the OP are so far off. It’s actually brilliant - people think those C8 competitors are way lighter. Truth is they are not.

No, the GT3 is legit 3,164 pounds. That the Z06 can post better lap times is almost a miracle. If anyone doubts that GM has some of the best suspension engineers in the business, just think about that 500 pound weight difference. I almost can't wrap my head around how they did it.

Some of you know me from the C3 forum, where I reduced the weight of my C3 Corvette from 3600 lbs., to only 2940 lbs., before I added a sound system and a normal sized battery to power it. It now weighs 3000 lbs. I own three Corvettes, (including a C8) two Porsches, and a Ferrari, and I autocross them all. On the autocross track, weight, or the lack thereof, is king. Electronic controls, ABS, Traction Control, PSM, etc, is Queen, and horsepower is a very nice to have. My opinion.

The C5 Z06 was only 3118 lbs. with titanium exhaust and fiberglass body, and it competes quite well at Corvette and Porsche venues. The C6 Z06 was 3530 lbs. with a carbon fiber hood and aluminum frame. The C7 Z06 was 3560 lbs with an aluminum frame and supercharger. The C8 Z06 has an aluminum frame, alloy block, various bits of carbon fiber, (wheels, brakes, and wings), and a composite body, and comes in at 3721 lbs. The Z06 HTC is 3846 lbs. the heaviest Z06 yet.

In comparison, In comparison, the 911 GT3 is 3164 lbs, the Lambo Hurricane is 3419 lbs, the Mc Claren GT is 3384 lbs., the Ferrari 488 is 3362 lbs.,and the Ferrari F8 Tributo is 3164 lbs. My heroes over at Lotus build the Evora at only 3075 lbs, with a back seat! (albeit for leg amputated toddlers only)

Why is the C8 Z06 so heavy? Why does it weigh so much more than its traditional competition, the 911 GT3? Or more than the 458 and 488 Ferrari's. I recently read an article where an entire metal body was replaced with carbon fiber, and the car lost 400lbs. What can GM do to lose some heft, and what can I do to lose some heft once I take delivery.

On the other hand, the V12, four turbo Bugatti Chiron weighs 4400 lbs.
Keyboard error ??
My 2006 C6 Z06 weighed 3110 lbs
Best Corvette I ever owned. My 427 ran
superbly !
NEVER HAS ANY ISSUES.... I sold it at 72,000 miles. Person who purchased it from me now has 135,000 miles (all trouble free)

It’s heavy because the mass would not pay for what it takes to make the car lighter. Look at the P cars, it’s why they demand that premium too.

Dry weight is useless. Wet weight is everything...Thus if you’re implying curb weight/DIN weight...I’d love to see that 3362lbs 488 and the 3164lb F8 tributo...Maybe add about 400lbs to that F8 and 200lbs to the 488.

My ZR1 with 1/2 tank fuel weighs 3590lbs and my 765LT spider weighs about 3165lbs with a 1/4 tank of fuel.

Other than McLarens...most cars have gotten significantly heavier over the years...blame the EPA, safety standards AND the consumer. People want/demand more and more comfort in their cars. Which makes them heavier. Sure the minority wants a stripped out car, but most don’t. If you want light then buy a GMA T.50 at 2150lbs wet. For me it’s Disappointing to see a C8Z weight an honest 3700-3750lbs. Drive a super light car and you won’t want to go back to a heavy car...

A long wheel base can give a stable race car, and wider and lower is almost always faster due to basic physics of weight transfer and maximizing tire grip Then add wide wheels and tires and you increase grip All of that adds weight but improves cornering grip. But you have to beef up the drive train to handle the increased power needed to move the weight and handle the extra forces from higher grip. That all helps the car go fast at a moderate cost increase. GM does seem to have done a nice job on the suspension geometry with minimal body roll and nice camber curves, bump steering etc.

Abouy 20 years ago we went to wider longer chassis in our formula cars that directly reduced lap times with better grip and more stable cornering especially in high speed corners. That long, wide, low chassis in a mid engine format gives a very stable and confidence inspiring chassis at the limits.

MT "estimated" that the 2023 911GT3 RS that they tested was 3300#, that would include all fluids.

Not and RS...but I can confirm they are very close...992.1 GT3: 3266lbs with 80% fuel.

Oh boy we are at it again!
One day folks will figure out how to get real US Curb weights out of the EPA test labs and compare apples to apples. Until then, we will have science fiction threads with with 3100 pounds F8 Tributos and 911 CUP cars with tags compared to a drivable car.

Let's have the first guy in Germany that puts tags on the C8 Z06 GT3 bragging about a 3200 pounds car and then see what happens?

thanks for posting real world true weights ………..surprised someone doesn’t accuse you of jacking up other side of your cars to remove weight. I lent out my race scales years ago wish i had em would weigh the 2 C8Z06 cars , 992 GT3, GT4 RS and a buddies GT2RS . Taking out weight is expensive but simply involves engineering and dedication. There are truck scales near me ill try to get a Z06 weighed.

Regardless the C8Z06 is very very special and sounds wicked and accelerates like a banshe. The Z07 car we have at Fabspeed after all my years of track events, PCA Clkub racing will be epic at any road course. So stiff so much downforce , carbon wheels, great brakes, thank GOD NO LOUSY MANUAL TRANNY …….its a great car. An understatement.

The Fabspeed C8Z06 valvetronic along with HJS German high-flow cats really wakes up the flat crank 4 valve V8. Wish id get my htc 70th anniversary car.

Dont bitch too much it’s an incredible collectible “ last of its kind na sportscar” for under $200k. Get em before its extinct !
