Default Winter Beater

After I bought my '03 C5, I knew that I was going to have to get something for the winter, because there's no way this baby is ever going to see the snow and salt. I wanted a 4X4 (have never had one), and something that would have a little cargo space for Lisa's gardening and those other times when you need to lug stuff around.

Fundamentally, there comes a time in a man's life when he needs a truck!

I was initially thinking about getting one of those Explorer Sport-Tracs, the 4-door Explorer with a short box truck bed at the back. New they're about $35-40 G's, but you can get a nice used one for a lot less.

However, two things came into focus that changed my mind: (1) this is the last model year for the Blazer; and (2) the "employee discounts" being advertised lately.

The bottom line is that I just picked up a spanky new 2005 Blazer LS, 2-door 4X4, automatic, 4.3L Vortec, A/C, power windows, power locks, keyless entry, AM/FM CD player. The original sticker price on the truck was $29,000, and I paid $18,995. From where I sit, that strikes me as a pretty good deal! I paid less for a brand new vehicle than I thought I was going to pay for a used one.

I don't have a pic of my truck yet, but it's black and it looks exactly like this promo pic:

Love that new truck smell!

That's pretty good...BUT sticker doesn't mean to much any more....they marked up the sticker on a few cars before the big event...which is not an event at all...that's not correct employee pricing...it's just more marketing.....I could have got this truck from my cousin as he had 3 of them about 6mths ago for approx. the same price you got now, a bit less though..It's still a great deal on a great truck though..don't get me wrong.

While I'm sure you're right that there's more to the "employee discount" than meets the eye, it's not just marketing. The fact of the matter is that for the U.S. Big 3, these are the deepest discounts they've offered in years. The loss in profitability arising from that program was a big factor in GM's second quarter loss, announced yesterday.

I know what these trucks cost last year and at the beginning of this model year. It's been a long time since anyone could get a Blazer (particularly one that's got all the options I've got) for under $19 G's.

Jason, thanks. I got it at Somerset Chev on Lakeshore.

mg62 that is a great deal.... good buy

Z06 Cab is right though I could have offered you the same deal 6 months ago.....

as far as employee discount marketing goes.... Is it true? YEP.. Very aggressive discounts on STOCK units... I dont know why they never did this before.... some dealers stuck with last year models usually end up selling below cost anywayz....

good move, the Exp. Sport-Tracs are about the worst new trucks out there for safety. I luv our 4 door Explorer and would never get a 2 door model as they have some serious tranny issues. The Blazer will serve you well however they are nowhere near as tough as the Yukon/Suburban 4X4's so although good for rain/snow off roading is pretty much a no-no.

If I had known there were so many Chevy dealers logged into the Forum, I might have shopped around more!

I agree with you. But I had 3 reasons for not being interested in the Yukon/Suburban: (1) had to get something that Lisa could drive comfortably; (2) it's going to be a daily driver in the winter, and they're too big; will never need to haul as much stuff as you can put in a Yuk/Sub; and (3) have no intention of ever going off-roading (who am I, Flavio?).

Your reputation is far reaching .... in years to come it could reach "fable" status. There will be a few of us left ......... sitting on our rockers on the front porch being asked to recall the "Flavio Fable" cuz we were there.
