Thought I would kick-off a thread for Mid Ohio this year. Only reason I am doing so this early, is that this year the race is during the August Civic Holiday Monday weekend.
A few of us were thinking of catching the Indy Car race on Sunday this year - Indy cars will be completely brand new this year - might be fun to check them out.
Proposed plan is as follows:
- Drive down EARLY on the Friday morning, straight to the track - get there by 1:00
- Catch all the practice and qualifying stuff on Friday
- Catch the ALMS race on Saturday
- Catch the Indy Car race on Sunday; stay over Sunday night
- Drive home on Monday
4 days, 3 nights as per usual, just shifted one day - you only need to take one day off work.
Ohio Dave sent me the following message. As you can see, he is going to hold rooms from Thursday thru to Sunday night so we have flexibility, but I thought I would float this idea to see what the crew thinks??
I can start a roll call with preference if you guys want.
Dave's Message:
"All is well down here. Very mild winter.
I have booked 20 rooms for Thursday thru Sunday for you guys. It may be time to get a mid-Ohio thread going so I know what direction to go with the rooms. The rooms vary from $90.00 to $110.00 based on 1 or 2 beds in the room.
I have a Thursday arrival covered as well as a Sunday night room for everyone. Just need to figure out who is staying what nights.
Jack - VETFEVER - Friday thru Monday plan - will share a double room

My $0.02. I prefer sticking with the usual routine. After the drive down I only want to relax with the gang and recharge. I'm going to pass on the Indy race. Not my cup of tea. I'm looking forward to warmer days and beers track side with you boys.

I'm down for the original routine as well
Also looking forward to warm track days and cold pints with this motley crew

I think the border on the holiday Monday could be a nightmare! I'm sticking with the usual routine.
Although I always enjoyed the sounds, smell and buzz of attending racing events, they now just put me to sleep.
Guess I fell out of interest with IndyCar that summer I witnessed Krosnoff's crash here in Toronto. Aside from the tragedy that befell Jeff and track worker Gary Avrin, that event along with the loss of Greg Moore, then Tracy progressively becoming more of a jerk and less of a winner, the antics w/ Michael Andretti, etc., bullsh1t between IRL vs Indycar just knocked the excitement right out of me.
I am intrigued now that Chevy is now supplying Indycar with turbocharged V-6 2.2 liter powerplants. This bodes well to high performance development options for the C7 (as discussed in other threads) and other GM vehicles. Ford's EcoBoost has been a hit in the market - it does great things for their SHO, F150 and Flex... Chevy needs to step up with this package too, and it's over due. After all, I've been enjoying the heck out of my uber reliable 2.7T V6 (w/ 30v DOHC VVT Twin Turbo ULEV (ultra low emission) in my Audi A6 for over 10 years now.
But for racing... watching these guys just basically follow each other for 95% of the event puts me fast asleep well before any of the real action happens.
So... what are the highlights expected in the 2012 IndyCar (and F1) season?

Count me in for sure Jack. But I'll stick with driving back and forth with the EEP guys.
Dave, please book a single room pour mois! Thanx.
I kinda like the Indy car idea.
We cross the border most holiday weekends , and with all the new booths at Fort Erie you get through fairly quickly.
Ohio Dave please put me down for the honeymoon suite once again this year.
Only Red Vettes with TSW Wheels are allowed to stay for the Indy race. LoL.
Well done Ian.

This our first Ohio event. We will be staying at a different hotel.
What about at the track? Can/should Nancy join in the fun?
Should we buy Corral tickets?
Gary, don't take the whole guys weekend thing too literally. We hang out, drink beer, shoot the s**t, talk about cars, look at cars, and watch the races. There is no shopping unless you count the provisioning stop at Walmart. There is sightseeing but it goes by kinda fast.
If Nancy is good with all of that then she should definitely join in. You absolutely need to get the Corral tickets. That's where all the fun is.
