Any tips on engine detailing for '82 vette would be appreciated. Engine is pretty clean - car has 28,000 miles and I don't believe has seen much bad weather driving. Original stickers still on engine parts. I want to preserve original factor look and use product and technique that won't do any damage to parts, stickers, paint. Simple Green Automotive Degreaser seems to be a preferred solvent. Any tips on products and method would be appreciated.
Just use a wand wash degreaser, or buy an aerosol degreaser.
Then touch up any dirty spots that you see with simple green and water.
Finish it off with a glow by putting 303 aerospace (or whatever vinyl/rubber protectant you use) on the hoses and other plastic/vinyl parts.
I had an 82, and while you are under there, replace all your Headlight Activator cap, Water Resevoir cap, and any other caps you see with Chrome ones. It will definately bring out the shine. Although Heat is 99% of the reason that hoses die, you can still keep them gorgeous by putting a protectant on them about once every 3 months. Not that much work for a perfect engine.
Thanks for the comments. What about Dielectric Lubricant on the hoses? I've used it on the weatherstripping and it works great - looks and feels new. It is supposed to help extend life of the weatherstripping. Maybe will work on hoses??? Any tips on detailing/cleaning flat black underside of engine hood without leaving any streaks or stains/discoloration?
I have no experience with Dielectic Lubricant, but if it works, use it.
Extending the life of the hose isnt a valid point. Heat is 99% of what kills hoses. Dry rot never kills hoses. So just put on something that repels dirt and grime so it stays clean longer.
As for your underhood.... just scrub and scrub and scrub untill it is clean, then put a protectant on it.
