Default Engine Surface Corrosion

Hi Folks,

I need some advise from all of my obsesive compulsive friends on the Forum

I just bought a new Yukon Denali with 2000 miles on it. The L92 engine typically gets covered with white powdery corrosion and the Power Steering Pump resevoir rusts and corrods badly. MY question is what is the best way to prevent this from happening?? My engine is already starting to corrode. I tried spraying it with LPS1. It looked good initially but as soon as the solvents evaporate the engine looks the same.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I wish I had an answer but living in Arizona corrosion isn't generally a problem. Is this something typical to all vehicles in the area or just your Denali? Is the corrosion more seasonal? Do you think the corrosion is due to moisture or something caustic attacking the engine? Galvanic corrosion seems unlikley.

The company I used to work for had a large research ship. I recall they used to treat certain external engine components with something to prevent corrosion (for moisture and salt primarily). If the dealership doesn't offer any suggestions you might look to some marine corrosion preventative applications. Good luck.

I think it's moisture as it hasn't seen any road salt. My mechanic says it's common and nothing to worry about. I agree with that assessment from a practical standpoint but I plan to maintain this vehicle like my Vette and to that end, corrosion under the hood is ......

It is normal for non-painted cast aluminum. Is just Al2O3 (aluminum oxide). Nothing to worry about.

This condition is generally worse if the cast aluminum is exposed to a salt environment.

Yup....But.....My LS1 does not have that problem. I wonder if GM changed manufacturing specs / alloys?

Where I work, if we don't want bare aluminum to corrode, short of anodizing it, we coat it with a chem film called irridite. This works good for machined parts, but it will have various colors if put on a cast surface. We are also starting to phase out irridite because of environmental concerns with the coating.

Personally, I'd just live with the aluminum oxide corrosion.

Well - I'm just too much of an perfectionist to live with it. I just misted the AL parts of the engine with LPS2. Looks great. The test will be to see what happens when the engine warms up and the solvents evaporate.

Would something like this leave enough protection to rid the discoloring as aluminum corrodes ???
