If you are looking for a starter unit like the Porter Cable, Griots, or Megs then consider buying them new. The price is NOT that much different and you want the warranty and protection as its a power tool and can be worn out. I often suggest waiting for one of the big holiday sales and measure the cost of any unit brand new versus used. You certainly don't want to eat a bad purchase and cannot prove purchase and ownership.
Be very careful with a rotary if you have never used one. With a DA like the Porter Cable you can only damage the paint if you drop the machine on the car. The rotary will ruin your day in a couple seconds.
Sounds like a good plan. The rotary is an awesome machine but will bite you real quick. I also use an infrared temperature gun to check the heat of the paint. The heat builds up quick with the rotary.
I found a deal on a Makita years ago. The Dewalt is also a fine machine. It is variable speed. There are also a ton of videos on You Tube. You can learn a lot from them, good and bad. Just start slow on some old pieces.
