I haven't tried this but someone a while ago talked about the great finish they got when they manually applied and removed the polish followed by machine buffing the finish as they misted the paint with water......kind of like a spit shine.

It is safe.
If you want to prove to yourself that you aren't wasting more than you apply, I would try it once measuring exactly what you use and compare that to what you use by hand.
The people I know only use a buffer to remove the polish.

I use far less product when applying it with my PC than by hand. Much thinner coats and less drying time. I never got the hang of it doing it by hand.
