No!!! Don't use ice, that will harden the gum into the carpet. This might be tricky, but put a towel down over the carpet where the gum is, and run over the towel with a Hot Iron. You may get a little sticky leftover, but vasoline would help to get the leftovers out out. Good Luck.

I would recommend you go to a carpet store and ask them how they would remove gum from the carpet. Surely they have some tips or products that will do this without changing the color of the carpet.
haley from pbs says hold ice against the gum until it hardens and then lever it off with your fingernail remove residue with toothbrush dipped in alcohol or waterless hand cleaner.
