I had a good 2001, for a local bracket racer. For the first time in my life, I covered my entry fees with winnings. ENTRY FEES ONLY!!! I consider that a major accomplishment with our poor pay outs.
I too, had a super 2001 season, winning a track championship and the Div 5 Race of Champions. The cash won at Topeka covered the expense to get there and back (gotta love that), but the gold card is the best part....I don't pay any entry fees this year (really gotta love that)! I've also been very fortunate that many local sponsors cover some of my recurring expenses such as gas, tires and some repairs. I won some decent cash payouts during the season and felt I was making money while I was having tons of fun!
But.....in the end, when I counted it all up, only about half the expenses were covered and that don't count the Gold Necklace, the Red Dress and the new Chevy Blazer for my wife!!!!
The bottom line is that we do this for fun and entertainment. If it's no longer fun we just have to quit because we're sure not going to make any money!!!
You got a GOLD CARD??? When I won the 2000 Division 7 Race of Champions, at Sears Point in Sonoma CA, all I got was $700.00, a nice Summit jacket, and a "Wally". I'm not really complaining, but that gold card sure would have been nice. The money was great, but it's gone. That "Wally" will be a treasure forever. I MAY have the slowest car to have won two "Wally's" inside of 12 months.
Congradulations on a fantastic year. Keep up the good work.

The Wally is worth it all! We have yet to win one (or a IHRA ironman) but every other member of our race team has one or more....we are the leakers so far! :D
