Default Do i need drag radials

Very new to drag racing, a total of nine passes now . Car is a 75 vette with rebuilt 350 motor, turbo 400 rebuilt and 2400 2600 stall converter . Last year tried three passes times were 14.17 , 14.24 and 14.26 all the 97 mph range .60 ft times all in the 2.1 range. Rear gears were stock 3.06 . Was so close to the 13 second range thought I would change rear gears to 3.55 and run 13.7 range . New problem now is getting traction of the launch . Tires are 255/50/17 Nitto 555 extreme . Times this year have been a best 14.19, 96 mph and 60 ft in the 2.1 range as well . Other times have been as high as 14. 4 99 mph and 2.4 60 ft . Car does ok launching 2000 rpms and under, but slow 60 ft . If I try and launch around 2200 rpms just spin the tires and slow 60 ft and 1/4 mile times . Do I just need more practice in launching car or should I change to a dot drag radial . Thanks for any help George

If you are spinning, then go to a DR. If you want the best hooking DR, then go for a Hoosier unless you will be driving it and get caught in the rain.

For that power Id recommend the mickey thompson et street. It will hook great and last longer than the hoosier.

Ordered some M/T ET Street Radials today . Had four BFG Advantage TAs I purchased last year that I traded in ,so price was not so bad . Hope this fixes my traction issues and 60 ft times improve.

On a high 13 second car Id take the longer life tire. The new et street R may give the hoosier a good competitor

If using a P245/45R17, the MT ET Street R weighs in at 25 lbs. while the same size Hoosier weighs in at 21 lbs. So are you saying that 4 lbs. per tire of less rotating mass does not mean anything and both tires will produce identical ETs? Just trying to understand basic laws of physics.

Should serve you very well especially if you are not trying to eek out every few hundredths at the track. MT DRs do last long as far as a DR goes. They are decent in the rain. This was my current street tire used for DD and occasional trips to the track with my former setup. For serious passes, we switched over to a bias ply.
Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Well im talking from personal experience my car has always been weird in some aspects. I added almost 10 pounds of rotational mass per side in my rears and with identical 60 foots the car didnt go any slower (same diameter tires). And for whatever reason just by swapping my npp mufflers out my car would consistently gain 4mph of trap speed at the track.

In theory yes that 4lbs per side should make a difference, but in some cases it doesn't.

I have the new M/T mounted on a set of 15 inch rally rims I was not using any more . Went 255/60/15 which are aprox. same height as stock 15 inch tires. Will not get to track this weekend to test but hoping next weekend . Thanks for all replies and hope this gets me in the 13 second range for first time .

Those will work well for you. I used MT's ET street radials when I set the NCCC 2B drag record (235-60-15) - they will hook nicely.

Keep your spare tire in place - extra weight in the rear will help hook as well.

Default finaly made it to track

Made it to track for first time with new tires . No improvement in my 1/4 mile times yet . Made ten passes on the night with three passes in the 14.1 range . Four passes in the 14.2 range and three a little slower . Tires are hooking up and times are more consistent. 60 ft times are still mostly in the 2.1 range and I did have two runs with 2.0 60 fts . I would like to get the 60 ft times down to the 1.9 . I think with more practices on the launches should be able to see the numbers better . Probably the last races of the year up here in northern Canada so may be next year .
