What gears do you have now? With even stock power you will blow the tires off, even more so if you up your power.
A good converter will be better than gears and you retain your MPG cruising on the highway. And contrary to the beliefs of some, a good converter drives very close to stock. This isn't the 70s any more, technology has done well.

Best bang for the buck in terms of performance, cost and overall strength is to buy a 3.42 differential from a C6 Z06. It's a direct bolt in to the A6 transmission and will make your car feel like it has another 100HP without ever having to touch the engine.
