FINALLY got my C2 to give up an 8 second time slip!
Quick recap....'67 convertible...555", G-Force 5 speed, 3.07 gears in custom Dana 60 IRS. Full leather interior, etc etc. Car is true street car, has made multiple cross country trips and ran 200 MPH at the TX Mile. When it was N/A it ran 9.90's@142 MPH. I changed the cam and pistons and added twin Borg Warner EFR series 68mm turbos without an intercooler. Since then I've been going through the learning curve of getting a clutch setup/tune to allow a decent launch and still hold the power once moving downtrack.
The clutch I ran for years was a McLeod Soft Lok and it's been great. But I finally seemed to reach the end of its capabilities and I worked with Cale Aronson at Black Magic clutches to put together a new setup.
The best previous runs hovered in the 9.10 range with a high of 162 MPH.
The other day I made the first runs with the new setup and a "guessed" clutch tune.
I managed an 8.89@157 MPH!! There's definitely more left in it...but so glad to get over that hump and finally pull it off!
Got to install my new plates also to replace the previous "RUNS9S" ones.
Well done, Jim! I remember reading your stories of trial and errors with your car for years. congrats! That’s a hell of an accomplishment! Love your car!
Congrats on your new best. Car looks great.
I see you blocked off the lights and grill. How much mph do you pick up with those taped up? Does the front spoiler effective keeping the nose from catching air under the car?

That wasn't really intentional for going drag racing. I had done that on my last run at the TX Mile a week or so before to see if it helped. It didn't that I could tell..didn't go any faster. I taped the headlights because at the TX Mile they kept rolling open at high speed. Just looked goofy...of course it seems like that helped some of the old racers!
Anyway...I had forgotten it was even on there until I saw this pic!
I installed the spoiler before I went to my first high speed event which was a half-mile one. I figured it would be a good idea and couldn't hurt. My car seems to lift as I apply power even when doing it easily....so it seems like TQ holds it up more than airflow. I never have tested it without it back to back. I've never noticed any high speed handling issues previously with or without it.
I've posted this pic a few times...but it gives an idea of the attitude at speed. This was at 177 MPH. Folks who do that stuff regularly say it's a great pic because it shows things like downforce being applied to the tires and the position of the tire wrinkles show there actually is some downforce still happening.
Very impressive car. Love seeing older cars laying it down. Have you considered using a hardtop for the Texas mile events?
I did. I originally borrowed one from a buddy...but later got my own. Was a little tricky. I had built my rollbar to work with the soft top and assumed if it fit there it would fit the hardtop also. Wrong! Had to build a new one.
The dark blue one was borrowed...the other one is mine and has original lacquer paint on it that matches the 25 year old base coat clear pretty close.

427 Hotrod. LOVE you car man and the fact that it runs in the high 8s and is street driven is just AWESOME! Nothing short of outstanding congrats! The Gen 2 Big Block Vettes have always been my favorite old school Vette (I just love em)!
