Should i go ***** out with solid roller cam for MTI 427 LQ4?
I am still probably going to stay with the radical S1 MTI hyd. cam (244/244, .612 lift on a 112lsa) for my 427 ironblock being built by MTI as we speak and my car arrives in about 1 week.
TO make up the smaller bore i have to go with b/c of the LQ4, 4.060 bore matched with the 4.125 crank (427 cid) i am wondering whether i should just spend the extra $3,000.00 and go ***** out with the solid roller. I figure this will more than make up for the little less horsepower i will be making with 4.060 bore vs. 4.1 bore if i had gone the resleeved MTI 422 route.
I need to make my mind up now if i am going to do this and probably will just go with the S1 hyd. cam and a radical solid roller would be awesome as this should get me 500rwhp thru the A4 tranny and better street manners/idle. Without the solid roller i will probably only make 470rwhp?
I don't mind having to check the valve lash a couple of times a year and what other negatives would there be other than the $? Also, i figure to hit the 10s for sure with the solid roller vs. hyd cam.
All thoughts appreciated and thanks.
Merry Christamas and a HAPPY new YEAR to ALL the my fellow DRAG RACERS!

Out of all the hardcore drag racers here, no one wants to voice their opinion on solid roller vs. hyd cam on LS1 stroker?

Unless you have some killer heads (At least 300 cfm at .600) you are not going to make 470 at the wheels with the Hydraulic. 244 at .050 in a 427 is far from radical, 255 is getting close.
Why would the solid roller be so much more money.
The two biggest negitives about solid rollers are intial cost, and longevity on the street. If you get 15,000 miles out of a pair of rollers you are doing pretty good. If you have a catastophic failure it could cost you the motor, or at least a lot of it.

Re: Should i go ***** out with solid roller cam for MTI 427 LQ4? (69 N.O.X. RATT)
Just as a heads up the motor i am having built utilizes MTI most aggressive and battle proven LS6 large valve stage III heads which have made over 500rwhp on M6 cars, with the same MTI s1 cam i will be using. These heads flow incredible and have propelled one f body into the 9s on motor only and several other C5s into the 10s on motor with the same cam and heads i will be using.
470rwhp should be easy with the stroker 3 inch exhaust and x pipes, especially if i yank the cats off which i will probably do. Thanks for your input and the reason the solid roller would be sig. more money is b/c i would using the best parts money can buy i.e.-Jessel, etc. and these solid roller drivetrain components are very expensive.

I am not familiar with the "new" small block stuff. I have a solid roller 454 in my 69.
I have to admit I would still be suprised to see 500 (std) at the wheels with such a mild cam. With a big solid roller .650 lift and over 250 at .050 I could see it, depending on the heads and other variables. I have seen some of the very fast new cars on the forum, so I do not dispute that it can be done.
What ever you do post the results so we can all learn something.
I am presently tearing down my 454 and going to a bigger solid roller in search of 500 at the wheels. I am looking for 10.7 -10.8's without the NOS. I am running a 6 spd with 4.40 gears, approx. 3400 lbs, Sportsman Fogger 150-200 shot

My engine builder built a 383 for a Z06 with ported Ls6 heads and a ported holley Lingenfelter Ls1 intake and a Hyd Roller cam. It made 491RWH and 492RWTQ. Those Ls1 motors are a amazing....

Geez....., and here I was using the words "hard core drag racer" as certainly a complimentary choice of words.

The solid roller set up with the Jessel rollor rocker arms is the kick but set up! The car idles much smotther with an even larger cam and the engine makes a ton more power up top. Your rev limit will also be much higher. This set up is not cheap but definately worth the extra cash.
For those that admit to having a solid lifter cam all say they love it! :) :steering:

Unless you have bulletproof tranny that will shift at 7000+rpm's I would not go with a solid roller in an automatic, the other limiting factor is the intake, solid rollers make peak power at a higher rpm(68-7400rpms)if you don't have an intake that will flow up there you're wasting your time,my hydraulic roller peaks out at 6150 and I shift at 6400.
