ATCO, New Jersey (WPVI) -- Atco Dragway, the home for many car enthusiasts in South Jersey, says it is permanently closing after 63 years. The Camden County race track made the announcement on Facebook Tuesday night. "We will not be open from this point on. The remainder of our schedule for 2023 will be canceled. Thank you all for your patronage and memories over the years," read a statement. The drag strip was built on Jackson Road in 1959 and officially opened on Memorial Day the next year. Just last weekend, the 29th annual Pan American Nationals were held at the track. "Special thank you to our 29th annual Pan American Nationals racers & crowd for making Atco Dragway's last event the biggest and best one ever. This isn't the end for import racing in the northeast!" the statement continued. In 2020, a Change.org petition was created after reports indicated the track might become a storage facility and auction site. Further details on what prompted the closure have not been released. Events were scheduled at the track through the end of the year.

I was planning on going this weekend. They had a Ford vs Chevy event scheduled. I find it very disapoining especially for those taking part in points series. They could'nt wait for the season to end to complete the presumed deal?

Im sure it was... but I guess I feel like you owe it to those who have commited to race at your track in points races. They may have chosen Atco over Island and now their screwed? make the deal and declare a closing date of Dec1.
Well, the end of an Era. A lot of good times and memories. It was a great venue for Track Rentals and night time test and tune. Going to miss it, that's for sure.
And, I agree, it really was a crappy move to all the series points participants. Hope Island can stay open. They are the only game in NJ now.
In case anyone is interested........... I did hear a rumor that the property might the future site for warehouses? Check out the video.

Reason: add
Every track that dies just invites more street racing.
I'm trying to remember the last time I saw a NEW track being built.
Population keeps increasing, but tracks keep closing. They built a new 1/8 mile track south of Dallas a few years back as seen below, though have closed many more in the state during that time. Land value going up with expansion I’m sure drives the selling off, but if you build it too far out it won’t have the draw to stay in business. https://www.dragzine.com/news/xtreme...-taking-shape/
