Default Vortec v L98 Heads?

Disregarding the obvious , weight and manifold choice; which would be the better head in stock form for a budget rebuild on a street 383.
113 L98 heads or Vortec.
The Vortecs seem to get good reviews as far as flow goes , valve sizes are same and chamber size doesn't matter as I have to buy new pistons.Have both heads and don't want to invest in AFRs just yet.

I'm definately not the expert, but when I wanted to convert a remanufactured '87 350 to replace a vortec for my '96 Suburban, the engine builder (Jasper Engines) told me it could be done by using the heads, intake, cam & lifters, timing cover, etc... from the original 96 engine. The tech said that the block was essencially the same (as long as it came with a factory roller cam to begin with).

I never ended up doing the swap, so I can't say if it would have worked in the real world or not.

The vortecs make great torque! I would if I didn't mind iron heads. They won't make any huge flow numbers but would work great on a driver. Usually good for 40 ft/lbs.

I've always heard the Vortec heads flow better because of the design. Okinawa86vette (Chris) has a set of Edelbrock E-Tec 200 aluminum vortecs with low miles for sale if you're interested.

He does but he just bought a 383 long block from SDPC and it came with E-TEC 200 heads so now he has 2 sets.

How much is the 'raised port' thing,
really worth, in terms of power?

Or, if you try hard, can you get 99 percent as
good with the old port locaton.

aftermarket support, is thin.

"normally" it is better because it give's a better shot at the valve for more flow

Meanwhile ,back on the farm, the question was.
What I was judging them by was the flow numbers.

L98 58 cc / 163cc intake. I 196 -E 155 @0.500 lift

Vortec 64 cc /170cc intake. I 239 - E 147 @0.500 lift

Note; Stock LT1 head only flows 214 @0.500.

I have both types , AFRs are $3000 in local pesos and I would like to get the engine running with the heads I already own and swap to TFS /AFRs later.

Don't forget that you need a vortec intake manifold for a head swap.

RACE ON!!!
