Default Crank Trigger

As some of you may know I have been running my timing locked out only to find out that for some reason the timing is retarding, and I have gone to great-ish lengths to find out why. My best estimate is that is a stacking of tolerances from the crank to the distributor.

I have decided to install a crank trigger to ensure the timing is rock steady. I wanted to run a small nitrous shot and I will feel more comfortable knowing the timing will not change.

That leads me to my inquiry: Has anyone here installed a crank trigger on their setup? After researching the different brands I have decided to purchase the kit from Mallory because it includes an easy to use adjustment mechanism for setting the timing.

Summit has it on backorder until this coming Friday so I won't get it until the following week. I will install it and report back on the installation and track results if anyone here is interested.

Thanks,

Travis

From: Las Vegas - Just stop perpetuating myths please.
Default Some ign boxes will retard timing as rpm increase.

I looked all over this morning for the reference where i read this but could not find it. But some ign boxes tend to retard timing significantly with higher rpm and since ur dist is locked u can't adjust the wieghts and springs (advance curve) for this. If u have a spare dist that still has the mech advance set-up, u might just drop it in for a try. Jacobs used to sell a serious timing control for NOx and i still see its availible although the company is owned by Accel now (i think).
Also i've read the best crank triggers are the ones with the sensor mounted to the flywheel/flexplate as the damper mounted triggers are open to road debris.
BTW i don't know if u need the dist housing and gear in place to ensure the cam oil galley press is maintained and the gear maintains cam stability? Or just cover the dist hole? Anyways this is interesting if it can eliminate that dist, so please post ur results. cardo0

Cardo: A crank trigger just triggers the ignition to send a spark to the coil which is still hooked to the distributor to transfer the spark to the correct cylinder. The timing even will be perfectly stable, but the phasing of the rotor may still vary. The phasing is not as important as it won't affect when the spark fires unless it is pretty far off the contact. With a rotor ~3/8" long there is some room for a phase error. The distributor is required to drive the oil pump so it stays in place.

A distributor less system with coil-on-cylinder ignition would certainly be nice, but is way out of my budget!
