Question about roller lifters...
I just picked up a 1999 5.7 (350) short block for free. It's nice having a good friend that owns a repair shop.
The numbers on the block show it to be used in Vortech trucks, Gen. 1 crate motors, and ZZ4's. It has the factory roller lifters with the hold down hardware intact.
The cylinder walls are in great shape with no ridge at the top of the bores. The compression was 150-160 in all cylinders. I'm thinking of building this shortblock in the future.
I'm old school and have never had an engine with roller lifters. My question is can the roller lifters be used with a different cam or do you have to change the lifters when you install a new cam like you do with a flat tappet design?
I'm thinking of using this shortblock to build a low budget bracket motor for a S-10 that we just picked up to build into a bracket racer.
Thanks,
Jeff

I was hoping that was the case.
Jeff
Not all vortec blocks have a fully machined mounting boss for mechanical fuel pump ... yours may or may not be ready for mechanical pump ... won't matter if you run electric pump. Some shops can complete the machinework.
As said, if vortec lifters in good shape ... you can reuse on most any roller cam.
