Default chewing up dist gears.....

Gkull I did see you reply.

Here is my observations.
This is the 4th cam in this motor. All was the same until my last mod of the AFR210 heads and solid comp cam.
Cam is standard core so I use my stock meloniized gear. Bronze gears are for billet cams.
Cam button and timing cover same. End play was good.
My thought is my heads were flat milled from 74cc to 59cc. I would estimate .050 in material. so I am thinking that since the heads are closer the V of the heads raised the intake. thus rasing my dist and not mating properly.

The newest gear is already wearing after 20miles. Well there is a wear make at the bottom of the gear not in the middle. But both my other dist gears wore all the way up..

Other notes. I did check the oil pump wit ha screwdriver by hand and with a drill primer--- All good there.

Is it possible for the cam to have a burr on the cam gear????

I just looked and a dist with 110,000 miles on it and the dist gear looked brand new except for a slight wear make in the dead center of the gear.
My wear is starting at the very bottom.
I was thinking though that if my intake was to high Could the gear still wear all the way up?? I guess as it gets deeper in the cam gear?????
wear starting on new gear...

here is one of the full chewed gears next to the newest gear....

Here is my stock gear and my first replacment.... Yes they are sharp :(

Any input??
Thanks
Dennis

I take it you did not have the intake port faces milled a similar amount. If not then that is probably whats going on. I have seen distributors that have an adjustable stop so that the gear depth can be setup correctly. Anybody else??

Boy does that shredded gear look familiar. I had a similar problem recently. The distributor is in a bind. On my car the problem turned out to be that I had installed a oil pump from a big block due to being shipped the wrong one and not knowing the difference by looking at them. The big block pump makes the oil pump shaft sit up a little higher than normal. My solution was to grind off about an 1/8th inch off the tip of the distributor shaft (with the gear off) and take an 1/8th inch off the bottom of the gear. This relieved the bind and fixed my problem.

Your bind is probably caused by something else but ur dist. gears are wearing exactly the same as mine were. Wear down low. Breaking gears. I thought my oil pump was freezing up at 1st too.

Is your block decked? Are you using the same intake? On mine it would last untill I tightened up the distributor clamp.

If you can't find the true cause of the problem, grind it down like I did. I can't see how it could hurt anything.

Also put magnets on your oil filter for awhile.

Good luck.

Would the heads cause the intake to sit lower than normal? That's got to be the problem?... maybe :(

Knever. Funny you mention big block oil pump shaft.
I had the same experience. I picked up my shortblock from the builder. Assembelded the topend and said I'll line up the dist to it will drop right in. Well it sat up just over a halfinch. I spun the motor over for about 2hrs, Wondering WTF.. Well same deal I had a bigblock oil pump shaft. They are only about 1/2 to 3/4 inch different.

Yes I have done about 5 mobil1 oil changes already and only have MAYBE 300 miles on the new setup since spring. :( this last change is pepboys oil. since I will be changing it real soon.

block is not decked. All the same from my previous setup. miniram ,etc. Only new items are the heads and cam.

I did try shimming up the 2nd gear. I went up .060. Gear just as bad. I belive the dist has togo down.

Whats the norm for surfacing the intake. or how about where the dist rest. seems like a pedalstal area for the dist that could be milled down some.

knever,
I think the intake is sitting higher.

My edlebrooks use to sit on the block the stock intake gasket say FP1205 .060 thick. I was albe t oslip both of then in and out.... So I went with th etrim to fit .120 double thick intake gaskets.

When I installed the AFr's I noticed they sat on the heads instead of the block. This is more of the norm. So I just installed a set of stnd FP 1205 .060 intake gasket.

John(bowtie8) is going to measure from his oil pump to the bottom of his intake(where the dist sits.
He has AFR's,non decked block, minimram, same oilpump. So this will be the closest to right height measurement I can get.

Sitting high? man, I wish I knew what to tell you. I remember how frustrating my problem was. :mad

It prolly doesn't matter but, my problem was the wrong pump, not the wrong shaft.

i've got a couple of gears like that. i remember them milling the intake to make it fit right (tpis big mouth) and when i put the last gear in i noticed that i could not puch down on the dist housing enough to prevent it from turning easily. so i just picked up some housing shims. of course i've got no alternator now either - i decided to order a powermaster this time and i was hoping it would have been here today, but no joy. i'll at least get the shims in this weekend and see if they work. i also cut a groove in the housing to allow better gear lubrication. i got 6 months from a bronze gear, bt i needed an iron gear. stock gear lasted 1.5 yrs. now i have a mallory gear.

and they do sell a collar that you can turn the dist. housing and remove the stock top and put this movable collar on so you could go up or down. seen it in summit for like $30 or so.

man this is a pain! when the first gear went i was 120 miles from home taking my son on a scouting trip, stuck on the road for 2 hours sround midnight waiting for a tow truck
