I just got my new Tremec TKO and pulled the old clutch, pressure plate and flywheel off. That old 14 inch flywheel is very heavy. I decided to go with a new aluminum flywheel. Are those things ever expensive. $640 CDN before taxes. Over $700 with. Anyway I hope once in a life time. I don't think I need the weight of the steel wheel. Do any of you guys run the aluminum one? Other then weight for the launch which I don't think I need are there any negative things about the aluminum flywheel that I should be aware off?
Thanks
Norval
I don't think you have anything to worry about, you certainly have enough torque that the loss of rotating assembly inertia shouldn't be a drivability problem. I have an aluminum flywheel with steel insert as well. The only thing you may have to worry about is a slight increase in the chance of warpage, but if you don't abuse your clutch, resulting in increased heat, you'll probably be fine.
Thanks Monty. I have been warned that the ring gear could fail earlier and it is more difficult to keep the bolts tight between the crank and flywheel. I was told also that the bulse of the engine is more noticable. It is harder on the drive train.
Cancel the aluminum flywheel. It is $700 CDN and a good friend who runs CASCAR lightens steel flywheels to almost the same weight as aluminum so I am going to start cutting myself and then rebalance. $700 to save 10-15 lbs it just too high.
Thanks
