Regarding Heat Treatment(Weld Normalization) of Chrome Moly Tubing
Actually,it can be done in place,(but it can get costly),with proper preheat and postheat treatment. All low temperature combustibles must be removed from the weld area. The area to be welded is preheated to specified temperature. After welding, an electrically heated "cuff" is wrapped around the weld area and the temperature increased to the post weld temperature required(depending on weld specs). The weld area(which is monitored by sensor) is then "cooled" slowly by decreasing the temperature over the specified period(depending on weld specs.)Note that I used the term "weld specs"as I do not know the Material Grade\Thickness and machine variables, which are needed to generate the values to write those specifications. This process is generally used in high dollar piping systems and critical application tubular support welds.
Bad news, I was just over at TPIS today and they are all out of that bar and don't plan to make any more. Jim told me that they just didn't sell enought of them to make it worth their while to make another batch. Bummer.
As I am in the middle of designing and fabricating my own, after viewing the pictures of LT401 Vette and Bowtye8's,I have noticed a considerable flaw.
Item 1.The rear supports for the main hoop are placed at a diagonal to the longitudinal frame members.(To allow top storage)
Item 2.The receivers for the rear of these supports are welded to the side of the frame.(To allow ease of construction)
I downloaded the pictures and discussed this with a Structural Engineer at the office. A "hair of the butt" analysis indicates an obvious loss of Section Modulus. :nono: An accurate assesment could be made if you know someone with a copy of StruCad,the ability to use it, and the actual dimentions of the members.
As the object of the Roll Bar is to protect you from death in extrodinary circumstances, you might wish to take this into consideration. :yesnod:
ET you are very preceptive. I had the same concerns. When i had mine installed, the fabricator was able to connect the rear supports directly to the top of the frame and angle them out and then bent then so they connect near the cureve in the main hoop. I can still store the roof in the back and the rear bars are very near the outer part of the car, pretty much outa the way. It may not look as good as LT401's but i hope it is stronger
