OK, when I put on my new top end on the ZZ4 block it was faster but questionable as to "bang for the buck".
Well, I did a big stupid mistake...
When I placed the new distributor in the block along with my new AFR 190's, Edelbrock RPM intake and all the other expensive stuff I timed it by setting the Distributor at 12 degrees @ about 800 rpm's.
It was faster for sure but after checking and re-checking I threw the timing light on it to see where my advance went up to as I brought up the rpm's.
It would only advance to 24 degrees.
The great part is I never knew I was supposed to adjust the distributor till it went to a full 36 degrees while I brought of the rpm's.
This thing is now an out-of-control animal
It's just sooooo fast I can't believe it.
I drove it for hours over the past few days.
Re: Yup...I found my really, really stupid mistake... (71roadster)
Are you saying that you timed the new engine with the EST wire still connected? If this is the case then the engine would have been way off on timing originally.
Re: Yup...I found my really, really stupid mistake... (CHarris85Vette)
I was impressed with the engine after all the work when I got the power valve deal under control. It made a huge difference.
I was playing with my new custom bike all summer and the Vette really sat after the power valve changes.
Now it's geting a bit colder so I started playing with the Vette agian.
I spoke with my friend that did the distributor curve and I assumed I set the timing as usual. Go the the normal idle rpm's and tweak the distributor to 10 or 12 degrees...
He informed me not to pay attention to the typical timing routine and leave the light on it while I revved it to 2,600 rpms and then tweak the dist. to bring full advance to 36 degrees.
WOW...this thing hauls major butt. I have sticky Eagle GT II's on it and now it will burn em right off the rims. No Joke. It's killer fast :yesnod:
Second gear is out sideways if I'm not careful.
I gotta hit the dyno again to see what it's actually doing.
Re: Yup...I found my really, really stupid mistake... (vettes rule)
in simple terms its how many degrees of a 360 degree circle of the crank stroke that the spark plug fires on the pistons way up to top dead center of the compresson stroke.
Hows that sound :D

Sheeesh,
my close friend just purchased a 2001 Ram Air Trans Am.
I blasted the my Vette while I was in front of him. I have yet to put in the beefy special U-Joint caps I had made up for the extra horse. So I hit second gear easy...let off at redline, pause for just a touch...shift to second and then hit the gas again. We both have Nextel radios..
he yelled over the radio...I cant even try to keep up & how did you get 3 feet of posi when you hit second!
