Why not 150 octane Alcohol???

Actually is was water injection for the Turbo Corvairs. You had to mix a little alcohol in to keep it from freazing. The pump went on under high boost.
Running it on alky, even for just an afternoon, sounds like a solution for those who can't seem to pass the sniffer test.

this was before intercoolers & wastegates for that matter.
they also had boose ignition retard
BTW can you see M85 burn? If your wondering why CART had a pit fire Sunday. Had everyone running around looking like lonatics because you couldn't see the fire again.
I remember during the oil crisis back in the late 70's- I was only about 10 years old, but I remember the SCANDAL of gasohol. There were 2 distinct camps. First there were those who welcomed the addition of alcohol to gasoline to stretch the gasoline, and decrease emissions, particularly since it made gas more accessible- and the lines at the pumps were shortened.
Then there was the purist, more conservative camp who considered it an act of a communist regime that was forcing the world to consume tainted motor fuel, and refused to put GASOHOL in their cars, spending alot more money for pure fuel where they could find it.
My family bought whatever was cheap- which was usually the gasohol, and the engine of our 1978 Monte Carlo with a 305 did ping on hard acceleration, but we got around just fine.
When I drove a Suburban up to Colorado in 1992- I noticed all of the gas stations had fuel with MTBE- methyl-tertiary-butyl-ethanol in it. I thought this was not a problem until I had to gas up- and saw the octane at 85. I reasoned that we were at a higher elevation, and so it would be OK- that motor pinged like crazy- and DRANK fuel climbing the mountains. I wondered about why these cars ran badly on the gasohol blends- so I asked my Physics prof about it. He ended up explaining different properties of gasoline, with descriptions of "stabilizers, lubricants, and cleansers", but ultimately said that it was NOT the fault of the ethanol that caused the cars to run poorly, but the poor quality of the gasoline that was mixed with it. This made sense. He also explained that there was really no reason NOT to blend ethanol in fuel other than the mild corrosive character of the ethanol, and the obvious effect this could have on the oil producers of the country. He described that there was no financial benefit to blending fuels by the oil companies right now- there's too much money to be made doing it "this way". He did describe, however, that it is VERY cheap to produce alcohol for burning as a fuel, requiring far less $ to produce than gasoline, and doing far less harm to our environment to produce, AND to burn as a fuel. He finished our talk by saying- even if we only added a 5% blend of alcohol to gasoline in our cars, it would cut down on emissions by at least that much, and would decrease the amount of oil we would be buying from middle eastern countries by that much as well- resulting in millions in savings.
I had this talk with my prof back in 1992. Right now- gas is 99 cents a gallon at the corner store in my neighborhood, which is very cheap right now- cheap on purpose, because OPEC didn't slow production last month. Imagine what the prices would be if there was more of an incentive to keep prices this low- like that oil imported to this country could be cut by a total of 5 to 10%.....
Take it to the referee.

The only reason to go with alcohol is for the additional power that you can make with methanol. You will pick up about 15% more hp if you raise the compression and advance the ignition properly. Ethanol does not contain the additional energy that methanol does so horsepower levels are similar to gasoline without any real benefits. You'll have plenty of headaches though.

Automotive emissions account for over 50% of all smog-forming pollutants in California. To improve air quality, the California Air Resources Board (ARB) requires vehicle manufacturers to develop engine and emission equipment systems that reduce the specific pollutants that cause California's severe air quality problem. These emission control systems are also required to be proven durable and reliable.
To ensure that these systems operate as designed, California Vehicle Code Section 27156 and the Federal Clean Air Act prohibit modifications that increase motor vehicle emissions. Since if properly designed, most performance modifications do not increase vehicle emissions, these same laws also allow the installation of parts or modifications proven by their manufacturers and the ARB not to increase vehicle emissions.

California Environmental Protection Agency's (Cal-EPA's) Environmental Technology Certification Program
Alternative Fuel Certified Retrofit Systems
Heavy-Duty Diesel Retrofit Device Emission Reduction Verification
Off-Road Vehicles, Engines, and Equipment
All aftermarket parts sold in California belong to one of the following three groups:
Replacement parts
Replacement parts guide Replacement parts are made by aftermarket part manufacturers to replace original equipment. These parts are legal to use as long as the manufacturer has shown that they are functionally identical to the part they are replacing.
Legal add-on or modified parts (Executive Order parts)
List of parts granted Executive Orders (EO's) Exempted parts are add-on or modified parts that have undergone an ARB engineering evaluation. If the part or modification is shown to not increase vehicle emissions, it is granted an exemption to emission control system anti-tampering laws. This exemption is called an Executive Order (EO) and allows the modification to be installed on specific emission controlled vehicles. Every Executive Order part or modification has an assigned number that can be verified by Smog Check stations, BAR Referee stations, or by the ARB.
Competition or racing use only parts
Information about uncontrolled vehicles Competition or racing parts are those that have not been proven by their manufacturer to not increase vehicle emissions. These parts are not legal for use on any pollution controlled vehicle. These parts may only be used on closed course racing or competition vehicles or on off-road vehicles manufactured prior to the introduction of emissions control standards (uncontrolled vehicles).
Additional Information for Manufacturers of Aftermarket Parts
An exemption from Vehicle Code section 27156 (VC 27156), California's anti-tampering law, is required before any add-on or modified part can be sold in California. Manufacturers interested in obtaining a VC 27156 exemption for an add-on or a modified part should fill-out and submit an application form and other required information to the ARB for evaluation.
California Environmental Protection Agency's (Cal-EPA's) Environmental Technology Certification Program
Manufacturers interested in validating their claims of emission reductions can participate in the California Environmental Protection Agency's (Cal-EPA's) Environmental Technology Certification Program. Applicants for VC 27156 exemption who also plan to participate in Cal-EPA's Environmental Technology Certification Program should inform staff of their intent so guidance can be provided to streamline the process. For additional information on Cal-EPA's Environmental Technology Certification Program, you may check their website at http://www.calepa.ca.gov/CalCert or contact staff at CalCert@calepa.ca.gov.
Alternative Fuel Certified Retrofit Systems
Under current California regulations, conversion of emission-controlled vehicles with retrofit systems to operate on alternative fuels, such as propane and natural gas, in lieu of the original gasoline or diesel fuel is only allowed if the retrofit systems have been evaluated and certified by the Air Resources Board. The certification must be obtained by the manufacturer of the retrofit system and is issued by the Air Resources Board once the manufacturer demonstrates compliance with the emission, warranty, and durability requirements. If air quality was really all that mattered, they'd never look under the hood at all. They'd just hook the sniffer up to the tailpipe and take a reading. It's really all about $$$

I couldn’t agree more. That’s why Id like to go alternative fuel for a day, and never worry about a sniffer test again. I do plan on moving back to California some day.
Oh by the way I took that entire post from the C.A.R.B website. :smash:
