Well....called the Comp Cams tech help line....the guy told me I needed something around 540 lift, I don't think thats going to produce 600hp. OK...thanks buddy, see ya. I have a 496, SRP pistons, H beam rods....good crank. I'm looking at 10.7 static compression. I'm looking for somewhere between 550 and 600 HP with the right cam. I have cast ported oval port heads(781's) with oversize valves, Performer RPM intake and an 850 Demon. I was suggested a cam that GDIANA is using but can't remember and didn't write it down, Norval used the same one too. I can't remember what it was but can I have some suggestions as far as hydraulic roller part #'s and specs. I believe the cam specs were around 246 at .050 I/E and 632 lift. Help would be appreciated....thanks.
I don't really like Comp Cams from personal past poor experiences.
This Crane cam is probably pretty good 244/256 .632/.632 They make it sound like some kind of Bad A$$ grind. You don't know how many CI they are really talking about. Your 496 would make it mild especially with your smaller heads. 244 is really mild when you talk big Ci and roller cams.
I have a Solid roller in my 434 with 248 intake .685/.714 It is mild enough for me to drive it home once stuck in fourth gear for 20 miles. It would lug down to under 1500 rpm trying to make stop lights and intersections.
Good reading. Almost sounds like the problem I had with my pistons...just the other direction. I've got the motor back with the right pistons, zero decked. Cost me a set of pistons but I still come out on the deal. Need pistons? I think the cam I'm looking for is a little smaller than those guys. Been fishing around today. I think I've got an idea of what I want.
All depends on how you define parameters. A 246* hyd roller isn't going to be a screamer. Won't be terrible...but I would think you could get into the 250-255* range with a wider LSA and do well. Those heads on a 496 are going to have their hands full unless they have some real nice porting done. A little more cam goes a long way on a big motor. I wouldn't even consider anything under .600 lift for anything like this.
We went through several cams in a buddy's mild 540. He started in the mid 230's..prgressed through the mid 240's to the 250 range..all while maintaining daily driver ability with aTKO and 3.08's.
Go check the Chevelle Forum too..lots of 496 guys in the Performance section.
