Engine Mods Outrageous Builds, High-Horsepower Modifications, strokers, and big cams for the Corvette

Default 540 Cam

Been out of the picture for a while, working in India. I'm the C66Vet guy building a 540. I am inquiring to get input on using the following cam with a Victor Jr or Edelbrock RPM Performer made for GM with Bow Tie logo (dual plane).

Cam UD Harold Solid Roller 257 265 700/700 112
540 Bow Tie
AFR 335's
TD Shaft Rockers
10 - 1 compression or 10.5 - 1
other components Callies, Manely, JE, Isky
Carb Pro System 1000 cfm

Leaning towards the Edelbrock performer (GM Version), less hassel and will fit under the hood. I would have to cut the Vic Jr 3/4 of an inch. to fit.

Harold stated that he could also build this cam in a Hydraulic version. But I do not know what the RPM band would be.

Using the Solid Roller, Edelbrock combination any guess on TQ and HP.

Is the 335 too much head for the cam?? Will the Edelbrock flow enough air 2000 / 6500 RPM. Most driving will be less than 5000 RPM, Sunday street show car.

I was surprised to hear that 427HotRod thought his 9 sec cam sounded a little wussy on the street.

Listen to videos at the track. You can hear it idling...but that's with open headers and idle kicked up a little. Throw full lenght pipes on it gets relatively tame.

not to hijack the thread, but one of these days, I'd sure like to read up on the nitty-gritty technical details on how 427 HOTROD did the Dana 60 IRS.

I would definitely find a way to get a single plane on that motor. The dual plane will kill it. You don't need the bottom end power....you need to stretch the RPm range out so it can pull. Those 335 heads can get all over the 800 HP range with enough cam. ML67 is making 702 RWHP with them on his '67. Mark did the angle milling on his intake to get it under his '67 hood.

I have a Super Victor on mine. Hood will close when I don't use a 1" spacer. At track I jack up rear of hood to clear spacer with extensions. But I also used a little trickery to get it under there in the first place!

My cam is a 266/272 on a 112. Your cam will likely peak down in the 6000 rpm range...which is fine..but there is a LOT of power to be gained by moving it out to the 6500-6800 rpm peak. Plus it's a whole lot of fun!


An old style Team G or an old style Holley Strip Dominator will work. It's tight but they have the angle like a stock intake as opposed to the newer race style ones. Both would really benefit from some porting to feed that many cubes though. I made 732HP with an old Team G, stock unported heads, and a 262/273 cam. I think in it's current state it could still get in the 775-790+ range easily with the Team G and a little work.

Remind me sometime and I'll tell you the joys of a Dana 60 IRS build!
