Today my car finally gets it's turn in the racing roll cage shop. So I have to determine a good 5 point seat. So I would like to ask any of you the Pro's an con's of what your experienced with.
1. It has to be comfortable for long hours.
2. This is a safety type seat I'm looking for so a certian amount of wrap around.
3. This is also a two seat car for navigator type events.
Monty - black goes with nearly everything. My interior is actually a dark blue.
Lohkay - I've looked at all kinds of seats. MOMO - you have to cut corners somewhere and I don't feel the need for $1600+ worth of seats if I can get two for under $700 delivered.
I'll go down to Summit today and do some measurements on that Scat seat. I never even thought of a folding but that would ease getting my groceries in and out. My battery is going in a box as far back as I can where the spare tire and carrier once was.
This race shops main business is roll caging Porsches and of road racing vehicles. I didn't even bring it up and he said, " We will have to put it on the lift supported in the middle so both ends hang down. Then when the cage is all in and you put weight on the tires, the cage will act as a triangulational stressed member." He also went on to say that they do optical measurements so the car will be more correct than when it came from the factory. He also keeps all the measurements for all the cars they have done so in case your having a bad day and tweak the frame they would know exactly what would have to be done to repair it.
It's nice to have Summit Racing right here. I'm picking the seats up at noon and dropping them at the race shop along with R.J.S. 5 point cam lock quick release belts.
Next question - Fire systems
I need a twin system. under hood and passenger area
Strange, my 12-point roll cage instructions from S&W say the exact opposite, get the car perfectly straight and well supported, as any droop/flex in the car when you weld up the cage will stay there for ever.
For seats, I've been leaning toward the Kirkey full-race aluminum models. They make a "Pro Street" seat with more padding and slightly lower side supports for more comfort. Folding won't be an issue with my case, as the rear "package shelf" will be even with the bottom of the rear window so the only thing I could store there would be a magazine.
George be sure to let us know how they fit :smash: ! I can't believe your already picking them up :D . Do these seats fold forward ? Congrats on your new mods :yesnod: , glad to hear your putting in a cage with the speeds you see  .
Greg - I'm not getting something as elaborate as yours. 8 point only and I just have to trust their judgement. I am having it done with frame stand offs so it will be possible to remove the body without cutting the cage. All .125 wall 1 3/4.
Smoked tires - They do fold forward. Gregs seat site also sells them and it give the dimensions. So the shop thought they would go right in using my existing seat mounts.
The girl friend already bitches about not even wanting to drive it because of to many switches and gauges and I never should have put this last animal motor in. I've even heard the word crazy and dangerous leak out. She thinks that it's just in a shop for some repair work. :seeya
George, First off i would NEVER sit on a race track in a car with a "fold down" seat (i don`t do them but not even on a "track day"). Second i don`t think you want a fire bottle nozzle pointing anywhere near you or a passenger i believe the "chemical" can harm you.
...redvetracr
PS: A seat is like a helmet "comfort & safety" co$ts
There is a "new" extingushing agent that is more "people friendly" than the old Halon systems, it is made for installing in boat cabins. It probably still isn't all that nice on the body, but may be worth looking in to.
Also, check the requirements for your santioning body. My cage (and all drag cages) are 0.134 wall tube so there is a little extra margin to meet the "sonic" testing.
Redvetracr - I keep reading the different rule books. CO2 with a certain bottle size is allowed if it sprays from the front down both sides of a motor. Rules also indicate that they want the spray nozzle near the steering wheel spraying on the driver
As for NHRA bars in section 4.11 they talk about .118 wall thickness. Previously I had heard .130 min and for sonic testing go with .134 so it will always pass. I'm not into drag racing. So I only go maybe 3 times a year and under 11.00 is not a goal.
In the event that a fire starts in your engine compartment, the Kidde FyreWatch extinguisher is ready to put it out, using FM-200 extinguishing agent. This new extinguishing agents is the successors to Halon 1211, which was effective, but too damaging to the ozone layer. The FM-200 agent is OK for occupied areas, but is slightly less effective and inflicts no ozone depletion.
All models include an automatic, heat-sensitive (175°F) discharge head, an electrically operated discharge lamp so you can detect operation of the extinguisher, a pressure gauge, a guard to protect the discharge head, and a manual-discharge lever. Can be adapted for remote manual activation discharge with the addition of a cable kit, sold separately.
Coverage in Cu. Ft. - 50
4.5"dia. x 14.3"H
Agent/lb - FM-200/2.0
I use the FE-241 system in my boat, as it is only in the engine compartement which is closed off from the "people" area.
I didn't even look at them till today and I have them loaded up to take back. For two or maybe even three reasons.
1. They are heavy - they are made from big steel rod construction. Thay are nice to sit in. The guys at summit told me they are hot in the ricer crowd.
2. The killer is they really don't fold down. If you look at your above picture. The low side bulges and the back bottom rises make contact as you fold it forward. So from 90 degrees straight up and down it maybe folds forward to 55-65 degrees. Not even 45 degrees so they won't help you store something behind the seat very much. In a 2 door rice car 100 pound teenagers could still squeez in the back seat.
3. The black cloth is just a lint attracter.
So I'm going to order one of the above seats that I first looked at :smash:
