I am going to be building a 427 hopefully in the near future, and I was wanting to know if I can use 454 pistons.I don't want the pop up 427 pistons.I want to be able to use pump gas.I have the 66 corvette 425 horse heads.I think the number is 858 on the heads.
I am just trying to avoid too high of a compression ratio.
Thanks
If you really, really, want to. While the bore is the same, the 454 has 1/4" longer stroke. Both engines (stock) use the same length rods. Therefore, the pin is located an 8th" closer to the piston top on the 454. A 454 piston would increase your deck clearence by 125 thousandths. High compression should be no problem with this combo. It ought to run on kerosene. Please, no flames for calling 4.00"-3.76" a quarter inch.
Nope you cannot use 454 pistons in a 427 unless you use a 454 crank along with them. The pin in the 454 piston is located higher in the piston than than the pin on the 427 piston. If you use a 454 piston and a 427 crank the piston will be so far down in the hole when at TDC that you won't have any (much) compression.
The rods are exactly the same length in a 454 and a 427 and the block deck height is the same in all BBC's (except the tall deck truck engines) therefore Chevy had to find a way to keep the piston inside the block with the longer 454 stroke. Answer: move the pin higher up in the piston thereby lowering the highest point reached by the piston top.
There are plenty of pistons avalable to set the compression where you want.I think those are the 100.9 cc heads but my memory is going with age.If you will come up with the combustion chamber volume I will come up with the piston # for you. What gears and trans ect are you going to use?
I think the heads are 108.9cc.I have 3:36 gears and a 4 speed.I want an engine that will live on pump gas.Not sure what the compression cut-off would be for that.I'm guessing about 9.5.
Thanks for your help.
