I have a 400 ci SBC engine with a standard crank. I intend to build the engine to 406ci and about 450hp. Will the existing crank holdup or should I replace it and if so what is a good choice?
From what I have heard in the past,I would think that anything other that a nodular iron crank would work. But I will defer to those with more knowledge than myself.
As long as it's no more than 10 under on the rods and mains it should be fine; I have even seen some of that hold up without issue but I wouldn't try it...
It's within range for the crank, certainly. It kinda depends on your budget and usage - do you plan to spray or use forced induction?
The more significant concern is the block - is it a 2-bolt or 4-bolt main? The 2 bolt is fine for this application with studs (and an align-hone), but the 4-bolt would be questionable...they're the opposite of 350 blocks due to the thin outer caps.
If this is a big-dollar engine, plan on spending the $600 or so to get steel 4-bolt caps.
